I was waiting for the meeting minutes from the Feb. 19 Board meeting to be published before posting this, but I can't wait any longer. The WGA will be switching to a brand new website soon after the 2006 Geo-Campout. The exact day of the website switchover has not been decided, but it will likely be the last weekend of May or the first weekend of June.

The new WGA website is mostly complete, but now I am looking for a small number of members (about 10) to help me beta test it. The goals of the beta test are:

  • Find "bugs" or problems with the new site so they can be fixed prior to the official release
  • Get feedback on the site layout and on "ease of use" issues
  • Get ideas for future features and functionality (to be implemented after the switchover)
  • Build interest in the new site and show it off to non-Board members

Who am I looking for? I want a wide range of members, including:

  • Members using alternative web browsers and operating systems (not Internet Explorer or Firefox on Windows)
  • Members with little computer knowledge or people who are good at busting things Image
  • Members with a lot of computer knowledge (i.e. power users)
  • Members with a dial-up Internet connection

If you are selected as a beta tester, you will be given the web address of the test website and be asked to perform some specific tasks. (An example of a specific task would be to cast a vote for Cache of the Month.) After attempting to perform the tasks, you will be asked to fill out a questionnaire related to whether you successfully completed the tasks, the problems or difficulties you encountered, and suggestions for improvement. I estimate that performing the tasks and filling out the questionnaire will take most people about an hour or two.

If you are interested in helping, please post a response here or plead your case personally, jeremy <at> wi-geocaching.com. I know I have already promised beta test positions to a couple people but you should probably remind me that you are interested.

We'd be interested if our qualifications fit into the ones you are looking for. We didn't know if each of the bullet-points were mutually exclusive, or if the 2nd, 3rd, and 4th ones fell under the first one (not IE or Firefox users).

We use IE and are both fairly computer/web savvy (about 8s on a 1-10 scale). Just let us know if we can help. We're excited for the new site to become active!

I post in about 20 forums and use Mozilla. I have a screen capture program (Snagit) to cap pics of those pesky errors... As computer knowledge goes I'm slightly above average. Let me know if I can help.

*EDIT Oh ya just as EnergySaver dabble with web design so to do I. I have a site but its fairly straight forward; I haven't kept it current, the last time I updated it was late 04.

I'd be interested in applying for this position, as long as it doesn't pay anything, as my accountant told me to keep my income down.

    - I'm somewhat of a power user and have had self-inflicted experience with making websites (if that helps any).

    - At home not only am I limited to dial-up but due to my distance from the real world I only get 26Kbps connections.

    - My only downside is that I've not given up Internet Exploiter yet.

If you need to get a hold of me, here's my card: 7 of Clubs

They are mutually exclusive... I am looking for folks that satisfy at least one of the bullet points (i.e. they have a dial up connection OR they run an alternative browser OR they have little computer knowledge).

    So far I've got:

rpaske - Mac with Safari browser
Folk Trakers - Computer savvy power users
Lostby7 - Computer savvy power user
EnergySaver - Computer savvy power user with slow dial-up
pcfrog - Computer savvy power user
    Cache_boppin_BunnyFuFu - Bad computer karma

To the folks signed up: I will send you a beta test task list and questionnaire sometime early next week (I'm still finishing them up, and then they need to be run past the Board).

Based on who we have signed up so far, I'm still especially interested members running alternative browsers or really old versions of browsers (like IE 4 or something). Based on our web logs, I know we have visitors running Opera, Netscape, Konqueror, Firefox on Linux...

Nope, not op. error at all. I'm the only one who will open my mouth when stuff doesn't work, because the others don't want to say anything. They'd rather keep on complaining how BAD the program is...sheesh. So, I get to be the caller to Milwaukee all the time. They know me by name there Image They here my name...shutter with fear, utter the words " not HER again!"...then they go running!! ROFLMBO Kidding...I'm harmless, really I am. No comments Jeremy!!! Especially about my bad aim & misguided snowballs.

BTW... I use IE and Opera browsers, I have DSL but access to dial-up from time to time. I'm pretty good at working thru more technical stuff...just don't give me something too EASY `cause I'll get confused with easy stuff!

I use Mozilla which is an open source version of Netscape. I loved Netscape but it was too unstable and many websites stopped programming in such a fashion as to allow it to function correctly in more recent years.

PS I would be willing to download other browsers ...for the fun of it... to test them out too! Super-user for our computer here at work. Otherwise more like a Wonder Woman on the home computer. ROFLMBO

I would be willing to put your new site though its paces....
I have a machine running both xphome/ubuntu linux. I use firefox with both but also have opera. if you need to test anything in linux I am more than happy to.
I have done some software beta testing so I am pretty good at finding problems and figuring out what user action created it. I can also take a screen capture in either linux or windows.
    I'm on highspeed internet

If "Webtv" qualifies let us know and we will help. That is still what we use at home although Mr. Timberline Echoes has promised a lap top soon. With the main purpose being Geocaching.
