got my snow shoes for the trek, ( borrowing them from a friend ) hope the weather holds and this will still be a go. ( I would still do it even if its bad weather ) I work outside 10 hours a day anyway.

I don't need to keep up, I just have to be able to follow the trail! (& yes, you're right, I've watched her running- yes running- off into the county forest on snowshoes. This wasn't a race, or a FTF, just off to find a cache)

I would do the hike in pretty much anything, it's the drive that would be the question.

looking at the long rang forecast still will be flurries on Sunday and about 10 new inches of the craphas to snowshoe thru. if this ends up being a no go, might travel to Meet & Greet & Sweet Treats Event

40 percent chance of light snow showers possible. Lows around 19 with temps reaching 25. Doesn't sound like it will be any real accumulation or storm. Doesn't sound bad to me. For us to cancel it would have to be below zero with serious windchill or accumulating snow that made travel treacherous.

Because it's a few pages back now:

Snowshoe to Eagle Source
Sunday, December 27th 2009

Meet at service gate off Atkins Road
N45 40.906
W089 00.654

Time:
With some folks contemplating four hour drives let's say-
Meet and Greet 9:45-10:20
OPS will provide hot chocolate, hot apple cider, and cookies.
10:30 Start Time

Afterward we will have barbecue (probably venison), chips, soda- a quick lunch for folks needing to get back on the road.

If anyone wants a copy of my track log from our failed attempt (the out tracks will be useful for our in), or would like a cell number for contact- email or pm me.

OPS WILL be attempting this cache at that time. The only thing that would call it off would be extreme cold or bad roads. We will make a confirmation post some time around 5:30 AM if there's any question regarding weather.

Forecast for Hiles as of this morning:

Day: Snow showers will become more widely scattered in the afternoon. High around 25F. Winds NNW at 5 to 10 mph. Chance of snow 40%.
Night: Snow showers early becoming more scattered later. Low 22F. Winds WNW at 10 to 20 mph. Chance of snow 40%.

The barbecue is going in the crock as I type- Mrs. OPS says not everyone likes venison so she bought beef (Sheesh, a guy goes out and arrows a 10 pointer and I'm buying beef? Shocked ). This is a go for tomorrow. If there is any change in that (can't imagine why) we'll post it by 5:30 AM on this thread. A little snow in the forecast but it sounds like a great Wisconsin winter day. Temps look fantastic.

Looking forward to tomorrow.

PS- Mathman hasn't replied at all to this adventure. He may be trying to avoid me until it's all over. One more day buddy. Laughing

I never would have said it was venison. I had a couple of cusions who had the beast roast ever till they found out it was venison.

As much as I would like join in on this fun adventure, I think it's best if I do not. Roads in this part of the state are in very bad shape and the wife was able to make it home instead of going to her sisters, so I need to spend some quality time with here since we don't get that much.

I want a full recap and lots of pictures.

Sounds great... have already done a few warm up trips up and down Rib mountain so I am more than ready.

Any guesses on how long it will take to get there from Wausau? Obvously I could look this up but figured you guys might already know!!

It comes out as less than 2 hours if you go over to Hwy 45 and then Hwy 8 east- then north to Hiles. Probably a 15-20 minute "ish" with the roads having snow on them? We will have a full car but maybe some folks can get together on rides.

Note that if you continue on 45 north of 8 there are only county forest roads going east (may be just snowmobile trails in the winter). There may be another way but we ended up going all the way to 32 and then back south on 32 last year. I think going east on 8 to Co Rd S probably is the best route.

Some of the forest roads are well traveled and others not at all. rsplash and I followed one for about six miles from 45 to within about a mile of the cache. 4WD only on these roads...
8 to S is the quickest way from Wausau to where we're starting from. Hwy 17 isn't a bad route either.

Hey, all you swamp-stompers! Stay warm and dry, be safe, and have fun out there!

OPS, looking forward to seeing you get that DNF cleared up, especially since you knew what you had to do but just couldn't get it done last time. Kick that cache's butt this time!

Ok.... ok...

I will reply per OPS' instructions.

I will not be able to make the excursion North tomorrow. I was holding out hope but the timing doesn't work out for me. I hope all that go have fun and that everyone enjoys the nice snowshoe walk. Have fun!

It's a go. Road conditions web site lists hwy 45 as snow covered again from late yesterday's listing of "slippery spots". However, we got nothing more than a dusting of snow last night here in Wausau. Check it out for yourself and decide here: Wisconsin Road Conditions

I would like better news on the road condition report but I'm tired of hanging around the house so we're going. If we see you there we do, if not- maybe another time.

PS- Last night Mrs. OPS cooked up the mulled apple cider and I had to, of course for the safety of you folks, test it out. It's good stuff!
