I want to adopt a cache from a person who is no longer an active geocacher.
The CO and I are in contact, and he is willing to let me adopt it.

He's unsure of the process of adoption, and since I've not done it myself, I can't walk him through it step by step.

I'm in need of some step by step directions (what page to go to, where to click, etc) so I can pass these instructions on to him, that'd be appreciated.

http://www.geocaching.com/adopt/

He needs to enter in the GC identification then follow the directions to adopt it out to you...you will then get an email with the option to adopt his cache....really easy to do.

I googled geocaching.com/adopt. Then follow the instructions! You need the GC# of the cache you want to adopt.

Hope that does it.

lostby7 states the most important part of the adoption process....

it must be initiated by the cache owner, the recipient can do nothing until the owner puts it up for adoption.

Needs to start with the original cache owner. Took us almost a year for the previous CO to initiate the adoption, even after many, many contacts with him. When it finally happened, the whole thing took like thirty seconds.

#1: Current CO goes to the link above.

#2: CO types in the GC number of the cache to be put up for adoption.

#3: CO types in your name as the cacher adopting.

#4: CO submits for adoption.

#5: You receive an email from geocaching.com asking if you would accept this adoption.

#6: You click yes and it is done.

#7: This will show up as a note in the logs of the cache that ownership has been transferred.

#8: You now have control over the cache to do with as you wish, but custom is to try to keep the original intent of the cache going, if it is possible. No rules with that, though. It's your cache now.

Got it. Thanks for the help. I just couldnt find the "adopt" page. The process seems intuitive enough.
