I have only been at this for a few months. I just got a Magellan Explorist GC so that I can go paperless.
First I am learning how the GPS works. It has a program I can download called Vantage Point that organizes info and sends it to and from the gps (at least I think this is what it is). My question is...do I need this if I have GSAK?
I am not good at techy skills and I want to learn the most important things first.
Then I can sally forth in search of adventure.
Cant wait!

Welcome to the WGA! I think you will find the information in these forums useful and often just a fun place to throw your thoughts around.
Regarding the Magellan GC, there may be someone in here that can answer your questions. If they don't pop in soon, you may also want to check out the GC.com forums. There may be more folks out there that can answer your query. I know that there are Macros that have been written that transfer from GSAK to Magellan but I don't know if the same file size limitations are on the Magellan explorist GC as are on the other Explorist gpsrs.(200 caches/file) |

First, welcome to the WGA and to geocaching. Pop in any time you have a question, or just to sit and chat. There are a lot of great people here.
I'm somewhat familiar with Vantage point and it is similar to GSAK, though I use neither at this time. I do know that many, if not the majority of cachers that use this type of software seem to prefer and love GSAK. They both do similar things, so you'll have to decide which one works best for you.
Have fun with the new hobby, and hope to see you on the trails, or at an event some time. |

Adding my "I can't help you, but welcome!" message... I am sure someone will chime in with technical help. Folks here are quite responsive to requests for help. You can join in the forums anytime for advice, jokes, banter, or general information. Happy caching! |

Hello welcome to Caching and the WGA.. To answer your question no you do not need GSAK. You can use VP but in my experiance with VP it well this is a family site. But anyway GSAK is easier I think I have a Magellan triton 400 and I had to use VP cause GSAK is not compatible but if it was I would use GSAK.. I know a little about VP if you need any help and there are TONS of people who know GSAK either way you will have help from tons of us..
