After working flawlessly for about a year (?), our Oregons suddenly developed a problem of losing satellite reception from time to time. We noticed it when driving and particuarly during auto-navigation.

I thought it was one unit that went flaky but both the 450 and 500 started acting the same way. Anyone else having this problem?

I've had similar problems recently with my 60cx and the delorme LT40 when in the truck, lately the lT40 has been getting stuck outside on the roof and the 60 I just wait a minute once I get out of the truck.

I wonder if over time the sensitivity goes?

The problem is only when driving, but they've never had problems with sat lock in the vehicle before. Which makes me think its a larger problem unrelated to the specific units, but I haven't dug up any news on that. I did find out that when Garmin did a beta system update in 2009 there was a similar problem because of the algorithms it used for choosing satellites to lock on to, or something like that, but I haven't done a system update recently. It's very strange, these things have been rock solid and with 2 units acting strangely in the same way, odds are that it's something else going on.

Whatever you do, do not....I repeat NOT add the newest Oregon update to your unit. The webupdater has a new firmware update that is bricking units left and right.

How new? I added whatever was new about a month ago. I have had that lost satellite thing, but it's usually because I've set it on my lap upside down.
Turn it back over and it comes back quickly.[/quote]

What the? Well how the heck are we supposed to know that, Garmin??? Anyhoo, I'm running v 3.7 and the current is v 3.8 so I'm not updating...so that's not the problem

It released Sept 3 and it is a real mess. Folks are having all kinds of problems. I bricked my unit with the update and returned it. Garmin really screwed this one up...this was an official release, not a beta which makes it all the worse.

Read one (of many) threads about it here (the complaints really start to roll around page three of the thread).

I got lucky, mine bricked last night but was able to break into it and got 3.80 to load. don't ask me how I did it. was trying to do a hard reset, and it rebooted it self half way thru the hard reset. have not had a chance to get out and use it in the field yet though. the Multi next waypoint feature seems nice, but did notice that on the Active Geocache screen topper Signal disappeared, wonder if it was a TM issue???

Well I've had more chance to troubleshoot these units. They hold reception fine when in the clear, like on the windshield, but move them to the center console and you drop reception. You can see the bars drop from 8+ to 1 or 0 when you move it from the dash to your lap.

Additionally, the other day the 550 took about 10 minutes to find and lock satellites despite not being moved from its previous location after shutoff.

Now, this is happening on two different Oregon units, both of which used to be able to lock on within seconds after startup, and which used to be able to achieve a lock IN THE BASEMENT.

Next step is to contact Garmin, but I'm just wondering if anyone else is having similar problems. It's just strange to have the same behavior on two units.

I had the "lost satellite reception" message a few times on my Oregon 400t. Sometimes it was in the car and others in tree cover. Two days ago it happened while moving in the car about 3 times. We were not traveling under a bridge or something similar. We were out on the open highway or street.

New phenomenon or has this happened before? All I know is this has never happened before, and it happens in the wide open, but while moving.
