I *think* I might have set up my starting point for my WhereIGo. I set up a zone and defined it, followed the advice of gotta run and set it to fire on proximity and wrote my introductory screen. Then I saved it. Guess I need to also figure out how to run the emulator to see how it actually looks.

It can't possibly be that I did anything correctly, can it? I have some images and stuff and haven't tried putting any of that in yet. If I have a photo of someone to be the "guide," is that person a character if they are just included to add a little pizazz?

I really wish groundspeak hadn't dropped the ball on this one. WhereIGo for technophobes would be so nice. I've looked on the groundspeak forums and it seems all those folks already know the jargon and such.

Something new to learn everyday, I guess.

No, it's not. I knew it was too good to be true....tried to open my saved cartridge and it says I can't. Some big long error file. It let me save it, why can't I open it back up?

Argh!

It's been so long since I wrote our two Whereigos that I would be starting from scratch. I'm assuming you've already gone thru the online tutorial, or as far through it as you can get without getting totally befuddled?

Yup. It doesn't take long to befuddle me when it comes to this stuff. When parent conferences are over, I'm going to give it another shot, and if I still can't make anything resembling sense of it, gls has generously offered some assistance. I don't want someone to just do it for me, as I would like to learn how to build these, but I might need some guidance if I don't make a bit more headway.

If you want I can send you the uncompiled program for our Whereigos. Might help you see the various elements and how things are structured. That is assuming I can find the files.

While I've not set off to make my own Whereigo, I did play around with the software some time ago. Speaking as a person that does a bit of computer programming ... I would call making a Whereigo programming.

Don't get down on yourself ... in fact, understand that making one of these puppies IS challenging.

Again I looked at it once ... while it's not over my head ... it's close enough to my chin, that I decide to put it off until I have a bit more time to put into it and deal with the likelyhood of some trial and error.

Have you tried to open the backup file (*.bkup)?

I'm a programmer and would love to build one of these from a "concept". I don't have a concept right now, but after looking at the "Builder" it's pretty crude from a programmers perspective. I also don't have a device capable of playing them so I haven't been too excited to build one yet.

With all the mumbling - I'd be willing to help explore options, debug, provide insight, etc. to anyone trying to build one of these.

Larry, I tried to open the sample one you sent me some time ago, but get the same message as when I try to open my partially built cartridge. I'm beginning to wonder if it's something in my computer, as I know gls had that same file from you and obviously it helped him...he's put together three of these now.

My brain is too fried after a full day teaching and then conferences tonight. I don't know what I'd do if I had to finish this for some kind of final exam. Wait, I do! I'd drop out and find another line of work!

I can't think of any configuration settings that would cause that, so the next thing I would try would be to uninstall and re-install the Builder.

Tried uninstalling and reinstalling the builder. I am being told my files...Larry's and my beginning of my own...are not compatible with the version of Windows I'm running. That's a new message in this whole scenario. My computer isn't all that old. It's running Vista.

I'd really like to set this up as a WIG, but I think all these different issues are a way of telling me I'm in over my head. I don't understand, for instance, why the exact same program is now informing me it's incompatible. It didn't say that before.

I'm in the same boat. I think the potential is monumental but the support is non-existent. A great idea with no follow through. To make matters worse, I'm solely a Mac guy. Talk about hurdles...

But, with 3 WhereIgo concepts in the works with cords and pictures and history partially gathered, I'm not ready to give up either. Unfortunately, I came to the appreciation of these publishing difficulties a little too far down the road and am now halfway there. But then, I am still waiting to dig in until I at least have a PC to work with.

I so hope someone will step in at some point and create a far friendlier version for novice users. The only upside is that there aren't a bunch of crappy, easily published, WhereIgos out there and the ones that are took some blood, sweat and tears to get published, making them worth there rare weight in gold.

Perhaps it is a good thing that it is as laborious as it is?

I agree with what S|S is saying about you won't find any casually constructed Whereigo's out there ... at least none that you can actually find.

Unlike hiding a cache ... I doubt you'll have any Found 1 / Hide 1 creators of Whereigo. Actually by the time you get to publishing a useable cartridge you've likely had to find your own 8 or 9 times Smile .

How are we going to manage a "Whereigo Rescue" system some day. I'm not looking forward to wandering around in some park removing things that are not really there!

I don't need to worry about this anymore, LOL. I had written up all my stuff after developing my storyline and taking photos and so on, then battled a bit with that WIG software. Set it aside when I literally developed a migraine. Wake up today to see a new cache right where I would have put it, and since I can't think of another location that would make sense....problem solved! Hurray!

I would have loved to finish the project, but I learned a lot in the process, and since the software wasn't made to keep pace with newer OS and to make sense for dummies, it was a blessing in disguise here. Whew! I have never been so frustrated by a caching conundrum as trying to create one of those buggers. I was ready to take up another cacher's offer to help me pull it together, but now we're both off the hook. No WIG in this part of the state, at least from me!
