maps

So my Magellan is down and out unless I can find another one to use for parts. Anyway we are in the market for a new GPSr as of right now looking at Garmin vista I think since it has the compass and will take an SD card.
Now my Magellan I had bought the map that had all of Wisconsin and northern Illinois and I think the U.P. So my question is How are the maps in the Garmin I know I will have to buy maps but how much do the maps cover? I have not totally discarded getting a DeLorme just not sure if its in my price range right now so any info on those units would also be helpful.

Unless you really like paying for stuff that's free, I'd recommend GPSFileDepot. Here's a link to the WI Topo that I downloaded and it works great and the price was a big fat ZIPPO, ZILCH, ZERO. How accurate is it? Just as good as the purchased maps when I compare with others that using those.

Actually the GPSFileDepot maps are better than the Topo 2008 maps.

So than am I better off with the Garmin over the DeLorme? I know it seams like most people use the Garmin its just every time we look at them at Wallyworld they just don't seam like they would hold up. But than we thought the Magellan would hold up and now were down all because of a battery contact. How does the DeLorme hold up? I know looking at there web site it looks like a good unit but than I know people that can make almost anything look good on the web.

This is my take on it, I have had the Vista CX, 60 CSX, Colorado, Oregon 300 and 450 and the Dakota 20. I have always gone back and now stayed with the Delormes. I have had the PN-20, PN-40 and now a PN-60. For me they come with all the mapping you will need and it is also road routable. I think they are very accurate and a very well built unit. My Wife has and I don't think will ever get rid of her PN-40. I have had great customer service and great luck with them. One other thing, they are also paperless for caching and the Vista is not.

Just downloaded the topo map from GPSDepot. Looks great. Going to test it out today. Seems like a good improvement over Garmin's 2008 topo.

Ok so just ordered the DeLorme Earthmate PN-40 from wallyworld $228. Now for the fun of waiting for it to get to the store so I can pick it up.

loaded the topo maps on my 550 but did not care for them, like the routable maps better.

Garmin's 24K are nice and routable.

So ordered the PN-40 from wallyworld on Wednesday the site said for site to store would be two weeks. Friday morning I get the email saying it was ready for pick up!!!! So far the only thing I have found that I don't care for is the fact that the usb cable does not also power the unit. Now just have to get used to this unit biggest thing is figuring out how to manually put in coordinates. That and wish I could use it in Linux instead of having to boot to windows. now to go get some caches loaded in for tomorrow so I can get back out into the woods Very Happy
