Family stuff to see\do North of HWY 2?

Other than caching can anyone recommend fun things to go see\do north of hwy 2? Will be my wife and I and our 4 yr old son. We will be hitting caches and plan on traveling between superior and hurley. We are staying on lake Superior at the mouth of the Brule.

The Northern Great Lakes Visitor Center, west of Ashland on Cty.G, off of Hwy. 13.

Timeless Timber, in Ashland.

Bad River Casino, east of Ashland.

Taking Hwy. 13 along Lake Superior to Ashland/Superior is a nice ride. Small port towns like Cornicopia, Port Wing, Herbster, and Bayfield are nice distractions on the drive.

And I hope you like trees, cuz the roadsides are full of them! wink

I liked the cache on the big old train display in Ashland. There is also the cache down by a rv park right on the water front next to a old loading dock that is neat to go check out.

Berry picking up north in bayfield, is a draw for some. Go a little further and get the most northern cache in the state (I think it still holds that title) the view is well worth the trip. The roads were wide, gravel easy drives but washboards in many spots so be prepared for that.

There is a long drive in superior way out on a break water, there was a virt out there and a few others but it was a neat ride.

There is the whaleback ship museum in superior thats a neat walk through. There's also a tour boat up there thats interesting too.

Hayward is less than a hour drive south of Brule. You could spend a day here. Visir all the stores downtownm fudge shop, & Ice cream shop a must.
You can vist the Big Fish, and go to Wilderness Walk(petting zoo) take in a lumberjack show and lots of many caches. If you go to Cornacopia, you really need to hit Lost Falls. It's a little bit of a hike, but I'm told that there is a trail that goes right to it, thou we didn't find it till we hiked out. ALso lots of State Parks. Copper Falls, Amnicon, Patterson, and a nice little park/campgound just south of Brule and the fishhatchery is kinda cool too.

A day trip to Madeline Island. Big Top Chautauqua (http://www.bigtop.org/) in Bayfield. Ashland, and the Hurley area in fact all along the route have numerous museums, attractions etc. dedicated to mining. Not sure what's available as far as art and craft fairs, but you might check out some chamber sites. One of the hardest to find caches in the area: BIG ROCK, GC1DB6N. A little west of Washburn in Big Rock campground. If you take HWY 13 heading north, here are two of my favorite Earthcaches. Minersville Artesian GC1PM7Y (best darn water) and BLACK GRANITE GC1A3WR (truly beautiful). The first is only about a mile off 13 and the second is right on 13.

GCX17W-SCOUT'S SLIPPERY SLIDE

Yes this might technically count as caching, BUT if it's a nice day I could personally spend at least a couple of hours there. Water isn't too deep and Siskiwit Falls has a natural waterslide that could provide HOURS of fun IMO.

Not sure if it's FAMILY fun, but the White Winter Winery in Iron River and the Bayfield Wintery in Bayfield (duh) were sure fun for polish cutie and I when we were just up there.

WOW thanks everyone, that gives us a bunch more ideas, Hayward, Port Wing, Ashland, Ironwood, Hurley, Superior Falls, Copper Falls, and Amnicon Falls have made the list, I just hope we have enough time to see all we want!

We had a great weekend, our cabin rental was about 100 yards from lake superior and 500 yards west of the mouth of the brule river. We hit Port Wing and Wisconsins oldest school bus and the little museum there, twin falls cave was very cool and the cache there made my favorites list. The steam train in Ashland was a hit with my 4 yr old. Hurleys Gnaughty or Gneiss was a cool stop for a cache and then over to michigan to check out the 52' tall indian. Headed up to superior falls and did the EC and the most westerly point in michigan cache. Those falls were cool, we crawled along the rocks and got pretty close. We spent some time at Amnicon falls state park, and then hit hayward on the way home. Went thru the fresh water fishing hall of fame and the giant muskie, and the micro near there. We hit the Norske Nook for PIE, huge giant pie and then headed home. All together a fun filled weekend with lots of driving and trees Smile
