Well, I was going to put this in a regional thread but I'm not sure if it fits in NE or NC or NW.

Anyhoo, ever since I got the wife's convertible stuck in a logging road in the middle of winter Embarassed I thought if I had a truck someday I'd get back and hunt for some caches that required a bit more height and horsepower to drive to.

Well now I do. I'm going to be just north of Gresham (don't ask why), where of course there are NO caches because it's the Menominee reservation. So I'm looking for some caches that are off the paved path to the north, NE, or NW of there. Any suggestions are welcome.

Just how far north of Gresham? And do you really want to test out that trucks limits?

If so, as I've said before in a few forum posts, head to the Keweenaw Peninsula and down the Mandan Road (series of 20 some). In addition, head to the end of the peninsula to the Rocket Range Virtual. Won't be disappointed, unless you get stuck...

You will climb hills, cross creeks, traverse craters and have a unbelievable time.

To the northwest and closer, you have Mt. Whittlesey, Berkshire Mine and Eagles Peak caches south of Mellen. Not quite as difficult, but if you come at them from the east, they are a real hoot.

Keweenaw looks great but is farther than I want to drive. I'd like to keep it to 1 - 1.5 hours of Gresham b/c I need to get back in the early evening.

It's a new-old truck so I'm willing to let it take a some abuse.

One of our favorites was SHIFT_MADCityXOC GCGB76 We did this back in '03, and started from the west with our van. Ran into a 4x4 vehicle that recommended that we turn back, and I actually did. We tried it from the east approach then, and it was much easier. It is somewhere near Black River Falls, but not really.

Yah, just to clarify, I am not looking to go boulder-roading, it's just that the Sebring convertible didn't have quite the clearance of the Tahoe. I don't mind the hike on logging roads a-course but why not use all the tools you got...

I thought someone would pick that up comment. So put this one in your memory banks: "I'm looking for some park and grab caches." You read that right. Shocked All depends how you define P&G....

Besides, I got my fill of literally running up and down those logging roads on a LCG run last spring after I decided it was better to park the car on the main roads. If I wouldn't have found that bundle of discarded roof shingles for traction I don't know how I would have gotten the Sebring out of "Schultz Drive..."

That's what Rescue Missions are for. I'd come get you for 10 points! Razz

(Hear you're still driving around with a bundle of shingles, but no spare Smile )

I statement my father would always recite was, "With 4 wheel drive, you just get stuck even worse." I took that to heart, and drive in 2 wheel with 4 in reserve. It's surprising how seldom I use 4 wheel and where I have traveled in two. Clearance is an issue; you learn real fast to drive slower and feel the terrain and avoid the surprises.

The trip went very well; thanks to those who provided recommendations. Got a little mud on the tires and rolled over a few rocks and thru some ruts I wouldn't have wanted to take the car through. I also remembered NOT to trust auto-navigation in the Nicolet National forest.

Favorites for the day are Peaceful Ridge, GC18GAA for making me glad I had the truck, Isaiah's Booyah Cache GCX0PM despite the fact I lost my sunglasses and got wet feet, and GCW2ZR The Ridge for some amazing kettles that I avoided thanks to advice from HP2 (yes I do read old logs).
