cache rescue or not?

We are archiving a cache that we put out about four months ago. The 9/2/11 windstorm that blew through the area knocked over a whole bunch of trees, many of which ended up in a tangle at GZ. I went out to look for the container, but I couldn't get closer than 15', and all of my visual clues are altered now. The container would still be there, and it may even be in good shape (it was partially "tucked in"), but I can't get to it.

Would this be suitable for a cache rescue mission or not? It might be dangerous, and it would be best done by two or more people together (preferably young and strong of body, and preferably with heavy equipment and a chainsaw Wink

). The container and contents are not geotrash, but rather archival material waiting to be uncovered by future archeologists when the trees have decayed to the point of being able to be scraped away.

Opinions?

That's a great question. I have the chainsaws, a strong back, and enjoy a challenge. The bigger question is if a chainsaw is really allowed though?

Maybe just disable it with a note stating the current condition (along with a "Verify Present" mission). Maybe some nice cacher would be willing to "find" it and rehide it in the same area so it's accessible.

Check who the closest Rescuers are, then pm them to see if they are interested. If they are, POST IT. If not, I guess it's your geotrash to figure out!

This may sound kinda like sandbagging, but it seems to be an isolated incident. Your cache...your call.

You'd have to check with the DNR on the chain saw, CJ. It's their property. The area had just been logged last fall. That mess at GZ is a pile of pick-up sticks, though. Move one, they all come crashing down.

Many hands make light work. Good-sized parking area, other caches close by to find, not too far for the pizza place to deliver...

I know! That's why I want it "rescued". I know it survived having huge trees fall on it. I just need to get it out.

I looked at the cache page and saw your note that you are planning to archive, yet I know that there are a lot of cachers that love a difficult challenge.

How about putting an update in the page about the blowdown, jacking the difficulty, and asking for assistance in the quest to recover?

Some cachers might jump at the chance.

That's why I thought a cache rescue mission might work, Tom. Maybe if we made the D/T rating one that would be a "hole-filler" for some, then we might see some action. We'd love to have more visitors to our out-of-the-way caches, but that doesn't seem to happen much here.

I'm even willing to "lead" people to the GZ area, but I can't crawl around under downed trees and into small pockets looking for the container, as much as I want to do that.

Some of the downed tress are close to two feet in diameter. Huge white pines just snapped off.

The only thing I worry about, is that in a cache rescue, they remove it and I don't see any requirement to return to placer. I would personally like to get a container back.

Can this be a requirement for the rescue? Or maybe I missed the requirement to return to owner.

That sure is a lot too ask of someone doing your maintenance for you. You could ask I guess.

As a cache owner if I am going to create a rescue mission to pickup an archived cache for me, you get the container for your efforts. Done this a couple times in the past.

Otherwise, I'll get it myself if I want the container.

That's the way I read the policy, but wanted to make sure my interpretation was correct. I have personally found two archived caches (not rescue mission listed) and informed the owner of the where and details of the location. Waited a period of several months with no reply and claimed the containers for myself.

I think in this case a "Verify Present" would be more appropriate for the "Cache Rescue" type. The finder would get the points for the cache rescue, but the container would stay in place after it's found (or be moved slightly to get it back in play).
