Has anyone tried the Wherigo app for Android?

I have an Android Phone, but no wherigos near me to test the app on and wanted to know if others have.

Let me know how it goes, Beccaday. I'm sure you got a wherigo or two up there.

Not sure if you are able to get the cartridge to load OK into WhereYougo on Android, without transferring from your PC. If not, the route I use invovled 1) download Firefox browser. 2) Install' Download All Files' and us it with Firefox. 3) Download the cartridge from WhereIgo website, using the PC format, using Firefox/Download all Files, and storing the cartridge into the WhereYougo folder. Fire up WhereYouGo program, and the new cartridge/game should appear as an option to play.

Just as when using a Garmin for WhereIgo, remember to save your game and restart it often, just in case there is a hickup.

Good Luck! Some WhereIgo's work like a charm, and some far from it. Touchy buggers.

I'm pretty sure you can't load it directly. I usually save the file to my desktop and then drag and drop it into the WhereYouGo folder on my Android.

Personally, the few Wherigo's I've tried/completed, I haven't had the issues of the game quitting but it's always a good idea to save your progress as you go.

I use Opera Mobile as my android web browser. Downloads should fine for downloads in the field using Opera. Opera Mobile is also available in the android market. Not all phones support Firefox mobile. My LG Optimus doesn't but that's ok as I'm more familiar with Opera as I've used variants of the browser for years from Opera Mini on my old flip phone to Opera mobile on my pocket PC to Opera Mobile on my non-android touch phone.

At home, I would download the cartridge as a pc file to my SD card on my computer, put the SD card in the phone and I'm good to go.

Tried an "anywhere" cartridge that didn't require a cache and it seemed to be fine.

As for the issues of short battery life caused by the use of the built-in GPS, I have that taken care of. My android phone uses the same battery as my old non-android phone so all I have to do is charge my non-android phone in the car as I use the Android phone. So if the battery gets low as I complete a cartridge in the field, it is just a matter of swapping out batteries.

A couple of months ago I bought an Android tablet and loaded the WhereYouGo app. Following suggestions in the GC forums, I downloaded the Pocket PC version of one of my Wherigos, loaded it into the WherYouGo directory and did a walk through. It worked like a charm. It seemed a lot more responsive and snappy than it did on my Colorado 300.

Finally got around to using this app in the field. It did great. Just gotta make sure I used the Imperial Units setting on the app (feet/miles) instead of metric. Found that out when I thought I was close at 94 feet but it was actually 94 meters lol.

Once I figured out how the game worked, it was smooth sailing and I made sure to save my progress each time. Had a great time on my very first Wherigo cache.

If you have an Android phone, it is well worth checking out.

OK, so I am finally trying to plan out a caching trip to use this app. I have a cache picked out: GC1ZFZE I even managed to get it downloaded onto my phone without my husband's help, shocking I know! Would someone mind explaining to me what to expect though? I'm just a little fuzzy on how this all works.

When you arrive "near" the first set of coordinates in the Wherigo cartridge, the radius alert will trigger a new screen to open on your device and that will have the next set of clues/directions/coordinates to go to. Once you get to the next radius bubble, it'll trigger another new screen and so on. After the first radius alert you get, you'll probably find it very intuitive and catch on quickly on how to finish out the Wherigo.

Well that was a blast! It took me a couple of minutes to get going while I was standing there fiddling with my phone. It kept saying I was 5000 miles away! I finally figured out that the GPS function was turned off. Once that problem was solved it was smooth sailing. My only complaint with the app was that it drained my battery. We had to go back to the car and charge my phone before finishing. But the whole family liked the whereigo aspect and thought it was great fun!
