On May 5, the main entrance to Roche-A-Cri State Park north of Friendship on Highway 13 will be open for the season. In addition, the stairway to the top of the mound has been rebuilt, inspected, and is ready to climb!
Those of you who attended the WGA Picnic at the park in September of 2010 might remember that the stairway was closed at that time due to structure failure. Now is your chance to return to the park this spring and summer to climb the stairs and also look for any caches you may not have found in the park yet. A Wisconsin state parks vehicle sticker (hourly, daily, seasonal) is required.
There will be a work bee at the park on May 5, and a formal opening of the stairway will be held on State Parks Open House Day on Sunday, June 3. Coords for the park entrance are: N 44° 00.083 W 089° 48.740 |

Thanks for the info... I was at the picnic and wished the stairs were open. Guess I'll have to plan a trip to Central WI soon. |

Thanks for the info. We were over that direction a couple weeks ago and wondered when the stairs would be open. Time to make a return trip!! |

Awesome! We'll go back to that area in June, for sure. We've been meaning to, as I have a photo of me at the bottom of those stairs with the sign stating "Strenuous Climb," or something of that nature. I was seven and a half months pregnant with my son, and went into labor two weeks later. It would be fun to get a picture with him by that sign, if it's still there. He's eight now! |

A little off topic, but today I ran into someone down here in Oklahoma who actually knew and been to RAC. It's a small world. |

Drove through the park today. First time this season. We weren't dressed for climbing, but I believe I saw that sign at the bottom of the stairway! |

My sisters and I (Team Fleet Feet and the Huff N Puffs) were there caching on Sunday and were pleasantly surprised to find the stairway open to the top. The sign about the strenuous climb is still there, but it's definitely worth the view. It's a great park for geocaching - lots of caches along the trails. |

The formal dedication of the new stairway will be this Sunday, June 3, at 11:00 a.m. in the Park.
More information can be found here: http://dnr.wi.gov/topic/parks/conditions/rocheacri.html
If you can't make it to the park this Sunday, maybe you can reserve June 30 for a trip to Roche-A-Cri for this event: GC3M10R |
