One nice treasure chest... gone. Mad
A brand new sandbar made the island it was hidden on much more popular.

OK. Here is a new one.

My cache at the New Glarus Depot is a preform outside and there is a can inside also. Someone took the preform and left the log sheets behind!!

They took a 50 cent container. Laughing

Arghhhh Mad I had another one stolen recently. I archived a cache in a park that had an ammo box stolen from the shoreline riprap it was hidden in and placed a new one...magnetic key holder in an artillery piece. I thought that might be a little more difficult for someone to find and make off with. Apparently I thought wrong. This is getting ridiculous.
I checked on another cache that had been stolen previously...it was still there...had changed it to a "premium only" cache. But a neighbor who is aware of it stopped to talk with me. He told me a couple of out-of-town cachers he had talked to this past spring reported coming across a couple of trashed ammo cans while caching north of town....mine??? I decided to check on some of the caches in that area but found nothing...didn't expect to since it's been several months. Maybe I should change all of my caches to "premium only" caches...will see what happens. Bartrod

I did not read this whole thread so I am not sure if this was suggested. I will now not put one out unless I spend the extra couple of bucks and put a bike lock on it and lock the chain to the tree. I doubt they will go through the trouble of bringing a metal saw along... Rolling Eyes

Oh and we do have an ammo can thief around West Bend too, well during the cache bash anyways.

Don't doubt the determination of an A-hole. I went out looking for the final of a series in the Wausau area and found the lock/cable cut into four pieces, but no ammo box. This was close to a mile walk each way, so they hauled that bolt-cutter in and it and the ammo box out.

O.K., who has the capital and who has the technological skills. New invention idea! LoJack for ammo cans!

I really like searching for an ammo can, often when I check out a new cache placement if while I'm reading the description it tells me you are looking for a camo covered peanut butter jar, I look at another cache placement instead. I don't know if others feel that way but it's like looking for a treasure chest vs a piece of trash psychologically for me.

I know there is often more to the hide then the container; location, beauty of area, view, etc., but even an ammo can in a dumpy area has more thrill for me.

This may have been discussed in the past, I don't know, but would the WGA ever think of buying a pallet of ammo cans and making them available for sale at events for a small mark-up? (Toss a bunch in the WGA trailer) I'm still able to find them for anywhere from $8-$12 a piece so imagine how cheap they really may be in bulk. Even at the price I pay, I spend a lot more on gas so I'm not complaining yet I don't have the number of hides others do out there.

I think a lot of people prefer a treasure chest (ammo can) over a peanut butter jar.

Could someone possibly find the Fort McCoy thread?

So it has been tried. Pre-trailer, but done. Costly too!

Personally I'll continue to grab 2 or 3 as I need them when I need them. Spend so much more on gas that I look at it as part of the hobby expense and a small part of it.

I just feel the pain of those with dozens of ammo can caches where they get stolen and the anger they may feel.

If you watch the auctions, it is possible to get the ammo cans a bit cheaper.

In Jan of 2011, I placed a bid for 24 cans at 5.11 per can, and got em at that price. Some times lots are smaller, and sometimes bigger.

The price has gone up quite a bit since then, and it would take a larger bid to get them, even at auction.

And back to the content of the original thread. I still believe that ammo cans are the best possible container, when used in a nonurban setting. I have had very few ammo cans stolen, and the ones that I have had stolen were in urban areas where I should have known better.

I see yet another Beloit area cache got yanked. Two of mine, and at least several more.
I seen "Big Mama and the babies" got stolen last month.

So sad...what are they doing with em, besides ruining a lot of hard work...especially on my "herp" cache....took hours to make

I never would have thought Ammo Cans would be worth the trouble of stealing. I hate to say it now, but a few years back I just gave a bunch away.

They had a big pallet of them at Gander Mountain for $10 and they were in great condition, not all rusty like most that I've seen.
