Hello Everyone,

Early Thursday morning we are leaving for Madeline Island from Hartford and we are looking for some fun geocaches to find along the way. If any of you have any suggestions your help would be greatly appreciated! We just want to make our long drive a little more interesting Smile

What route are you taking?

We were just there last month! As you probably know there are 9 caches on the island. It took us half a day to clear them all out but we did more than just go caching on the island.

In the city of Bayfield itself our fav was GC2DR4J Knotty Nelly III. A simple and short walk along a picturesque path. Our absolute best favorite when in that area was GC3KFFR Cache At The Falls. Please do yourself a favor and go there, it's FANTASTIC!

The other standout for us, maybe 8 to 10 miles south of Bayfield, was GC26CCD Washburn Waterfront Trilogy III. We had a blast at this one! But you have to walk along the Lake Superior shoreline for 50 feet in what was for us about 5 to 10 inches of water. That's what makes it great. Reading the last several logs on that one is helpful if you're going for it.

We posted pictures of all three on their respective cache pages.

I know that this didn't quite answer your question because I didn't list caches that are on the way to Madeline Island, rather I listed caches that are in that vicinity. I hope you can visit some of them.

We pre-planned to find one cache along our route about every 45 to 60 minutes to keep things interesting, but we chose an unconventional route there and back to visit friends. It is noteworthy to mention that on our way back we stopped at Zuma's travel bug hotel in Eau Claire (GC1D6XJ Sally's Savings Bank and Geocoin Exchange), which is in his front yard. The other standout on the way home was GC2JYMP (Amnicon Falls, Meet Douglas Fault). It is now one of our top 3 favorite Wisconsin parks, and we got to go swimming under the waterfalls there.

I just got back from there as well. I totally agree that Cash at the falls is a must do, absolutely stunning. Bring your camera looks just like the Wisconsin Dells.

I don't have anything to add, except we will be making a trip around northern Wisconsin the middle of September and will have to check to see if any of these are near our route. My wife has her 50th high school reunion in Marinette and then we are taking the next week to heading north and west to Superior for a birdwatching weekend on Wisconsin Point in Superior - with a side trip up the north shore of MN. On this trip I would also like to get a cache in my last 3 counties in the state - Langlade, Forest, and Florence. Thanks

If you get to Rhinelander, there are a couple cachers in the area who have some nice gadget caches: GC4D044 GC4DPN9 GC4G1W6 and GC4AJJC to name a few.

We were there last summer and really enjoyed this area of the state.

If you are willing to head a bit north of Bayfield and go along the Lake Superior coastline we recommend GC1G4QP Apostle Islands MAWICKE SEA CAVES. This is an earthcache with a beautiful hike and great views of the sea caves. We also enjoyed GC6F04 Point Detour. Just be aware you'll have to travel down dirt roads for at least two miles to get to this cache.

If you are passing through Rhinelander, we liked GC3N2KT, I Think I Spy A Monster.
