Hi! I'm new to this geocaching thing. I don't have a GPSr yet. I'm just reading up on the hobby. Sounds like fun! Over a year ago a friend of mine from Canada told me about geocaching and I've been meaning to check up on it. Well, I have. I need to get involved with something to occupy my time instead of sitting in front of the computer. Anyone from the Sussex area feel free to contact me. I'd like to see how this hobby is done before I actually sink some cash into it.

Welcome. Most of the info you need is on the Geocaching.com website. You can get a real basic gps unit for $100 or under.
Your best bet might be to go out with a local team and try it. Maybe post your available dates and times and someone will let you tag along.

I am available during the week and during the day. Depends on my work schedule. I work for the Waukesha Fire Department. This coming weekend I work on Saturday and don't know yet if Sunday is open or not. My wife's birthday. When I know more about weekend availability, I'll post it here.

Is it worth it to spend the extra $ for a Garmin 60 (the $180 one)? Or is the basic $100 GPS all you need? What do you guys who've done caching find out about what features are really crucial? What I read is the ability to stay locked on a signal in wooded areas. Is there a big difference between the 60 and the eTrex Venture?

Thanks Cathunter!!! That seems like a superb deal. I'm bidding on one on eBay right now and it isn't even that good of a deal.

Does it come with the USB interface cable and other stuff?

Hi, you may already have purchased by now, but I'll just mention a couple of things. We have both the Garmin GPS 60 and the GPSMap 60c. Besides the lack of a color display and the lack of maps, the 60 seems identical to the 60c. Maps are nice, but you can definitely geocache without them, so I would give the 60 a thumb's up. I would make sure that you get one that has a computer connection, which some of the lower end models don't have. If you get hooked to geocaching (which most people do after their 1st cache), you won't want to enter all the waypoints by hand.

One final comment, if you want to see and compare units as opposed to purchase online, Casanova's on Capitol Dr. at 137th has almost every Garmin model in stock (no Magellans) and they will match prices that you find online (within reason, taking shipping into account, etc.) http://www.casanovasadventures.com

Good luck and welcome!

Thanks for the info. The other day I was at REI and as I was heading home I thought about stopping at Casanova's. I didn't. I guess that I should have. I'll swing over there next week. That Garmin 60 sounds like the unit.
