Being New to GeoCaching, I am always looking for new and better ways to do my newest Hobby. I see that I just missed a Class that was offered at Bubolz Nature Center on Paperless Caching. Anyone know if there is anything in the near Future planned on repeating the Paperless Cache Class again, or if there is another one planned somewhere close to Appleton Soon? I just Purchased a used "Palm M505" and would really like to learn what the best way to do paperless Caching with it.

Any Suggestions would be appreciated.

I would also like to say HI to all you Cachers out there, hope to see you on the trail soon. Keep those Caches coming, and Team Hana will be attempting to hide a few (I hope) one of these days in the near future.

I'm sure that Marc will be doing another class. When is the question. I will see him in an hour and see what plans he has.

Install CacheMate and play with it for now. At $8, I find it a bargin! Unregistered version is limited to 10 caches, but will give you an idea of what it looks like.

If you are not using GSAK, I also recommend that for a thought out software package.

Is this Monkey Man? I am Lisa K's brother.

LOL, the old Monkey Man still Lives, but he currently is logging in as Juliowig. I am his Oldest Brother, who he got hooked on Geocaching.

Thanks for the Info, if you hear of anything, PLEASE let us know ASAP, so we can make plans to join in the FUN.

PS... Juliowig (Monkey Man) and his girlfriend (Whoangel) are totally HOOKED ON CACHING, along with their next door neighboor (tic43).

Marc is planning another paperless for beginers in June sometime. At least that's what he told me at lunch today.

Here's a link to a page describing, step by step, the Plucker/Spinner method of going paperless: http://www.geocacher-u.com/resources/paperless.html

Plucker is really written to be a web spider for loading web pages and their links into a Palm PDA, so it has uses beyond geocaching, like loading the recent newspaper to your Palm for reading when you're away from your main computer.

Thanks, now have that bookmarked and as soon as my new Palm M505 arrives I will be putting it to use.

I probably should have explained the Spinner/Plucker combo in greater detail as they have uses other than porting geocaching data to a PDA.

Spinner creates a folder of linked HTML files from a .GPX pocket query file. In addition to running Plucker to convert them, you can use your browser to read them locally. Just point your browser to the index.htm file in that folder. This is handy if your internet connection is slow or if you want to bring the data along on an unconnected laptop. You won't get all of the graphics, but recent logs, travel bug info, hints, nearest caches, and such will be available.

Plucker can spider the cache folder or a web site and convert it to a PDA readable form with hyperlinks. You can specify the depth of links to spider from the starting page and filter out links outside of the original domain to eliminate off site advertising. It can build a folder on your hard drive that acts as a offline mirror of the pages spidered. There are countless uses for Plucker beyond geocaching.

You can also download a free Adobe .pdf reader for your Palm. Due to the small screen size, .pdf maps are difficult to use, but possible in a pinch. However, you can carry lengthy documents in your Palm and run text searches for the information you need. I've found this to be very useful compared to carrying stacks of manuals and spec sheets in my truck.

Thanks for the advance notice, I will pass that info on. Wish I could make it, but June 10th is the Flag day Parade date in Appleton, my Kids and Grandkids would kill me if I didn't attend the parade with them. Also I have my 35th high school reunion that weekend, so I will have to do lots of jugglin of schedules to do everything at same time.

While it would be abit of a trip, I'm hosting a paperless in Prairie du sac (sauk city) on Saturday April 29th. http://www.geocaching.com/seek/cache_details.aspx?guid=84c12c1e-5ca8-40ef-a7c7-91e2 d751dd25

It is free, and I'll provide CDs with cachemate, gsak on them. It will be just abit past beginner, though we will provide handouts for doing Pocket Queries that work. (if we find the time we will add handouts for other portions of the class as well) And will focus alot on Cachemate and GSAK.

Cachemate can be used without GSAK, and we will show how to do that.

I found that Cachemate more than worth the $8 to register. I had used Plucker for awhile, but found it to be very cumbersome to load up the caches. And I feel GSAK is worth the cost as well for all the extra's it adds, such as caching along a route. (also to be shown in class)

Also, as long as there is interest, we will try and continue to host these every few months.

THANKS, For that bit of Info, I am going to look at maybe making the run down there. Hopefully I should have my Palm M505 by Saturday and would appreciate learning how to us it.

I'll try my darnest to make this, but with my 35th Class reunion and the Flag day parade, all going on, I will be running on empty. Hopefull by Sunday, I will still be able to function... LOL anyways, I am sure my wife (Rozebudd) and myself will make out there. When/where do we have to pay?
