Caching Phobias

A recent event at a cache, and subsequent much calmer conversation, has lead me to wonder how many cachers have a phobia or two that they deal with when out in the field.

What's your phobia (or fear, or dislike) : Bugs, bees, or bats? Water, swamps, bridges or heights? Cobwebs, mud, or spooky noises?

Neither of us are really phobic, but I did a full body shiver when a spider with a dime size body wandered down my bare leg after walking through it's web the other day. Ms. Honeybunny did the Olympic record squealing backleap when a rattler crossed our path just behind me and just in front of her on a cache in New Mexico(ahh... good times, good times). Other than that, life is good.

I would say bees and wasps for sure, and walking into spiderwebs doesn't exactly make my day either.

One of our greatest fears is running into the elusive Honeybunny while caching. We've discovered it's home location but it seems to be all over the state. It moves quite quickly, sometimes without a sense of direction, it seems. We've also discovered that the male has found a female. Someday there could be little Honeybunnies hopping around. Oh, the Horror of it all!

Kari's fear: caching alone and running into some moonshiners or some drug deal going down and get tortured and left to rot in the middle of the woods. Oh, and getting bit by something that I can't take care of.

Tim's fears: spiders or other creepy crawly things

Kamilla's (4 yr old) fears: there not being any cool trade items and bees

Alivia's (9 month old) fears: we leave her in the car

You shouldn't leave her in the car(wink). She's the perfect size for probing hollow logs, and she's easier to boost for evil monkeys.

I don't think I have any phobias exactly.
But while helping my daughter hide a new cache of her design recently("Star Light, Star Bright") ... I good sized grass snake, slithered in front of us in the grass.

Not sure why I "freaked" at first, as they've never concerned me before, maybe just caught off guard (I hope).

I have two fears:
1) walking into spider webs...the real thick ones that are hard to get off of you

2) sticking my hand in a whole to probe for a cache in which I can't see what's in the hole.

My phobia depends on my state of mind for the day, I think. One day I'm fine and another day I get freaky over it. I think the biggest issue is that being female and out alone in places where my cell doesn't pick up. So, mine mostly when a lone.

1) Thik grass way over my head gets me feeling a bit un-nerving.
2) I'm with the web thing... when no one there to squish the HUGE spiders that go with them.
3) Again, when alone, those back woods, swampy areas that look like something from "Deliverence"

Between a mama bear and her cubs.

We have run across several bear but never between mama and cubs.

We have crossed paths with a wolf who stared us down. We were in the vehicle... would not want to walk into their pup camp and make them mad.

Another thing is we have run into two very strange people (one possible running/hiding from the law) another claiming to be a writer of philosophy hiding in the woods for two weeks... we wondered if he may of escaped from somewhere. Anyway the thoughts of being murdered and never found did cross our minds after those two incidents.

Was okay with bugs and snakes until the two wasp bites in August. Now a little more cautious where ground nest could be.

It is most definitely big spiders. While taking the long way (instead of the smart way) through a field on a recent cache hunt, I got to thinking about how I was walking through a similar field when I was a kid and saw one of those huge garden spiders nab a grasshopper. Just then I looked down and noticed that I had just barely missed walking smack into the web of a very large garden spider.

Things that sting (wasps & the like) -- only because family members have developed major allergies after only a few stings. I've had only one in my life so far.

Falling down and hurting myself significantly -- since I'm usually alone, and wouldn't probably have a plan if I needed help.

Oh, and in a minor way, having to get into the water. Not for the water, but the things in there that could touch me (fish with teeth, loch ness monsters, or even aquaman for that matter).

I have been surprised that no one has claimed a lack of phobias. Or at least ones that generally would not interfere with caching, such as a fear of the number 13 (Hmmm... maybe a cahce by that name!) or a fear of .... well, whatever.
