Are you Waymarking?

Okay, I've looked at the site and the boards, but I'm more interested in what my fellow WGA members are doing.
I can see the attraction of a yellow pages with coords, and I can see the attraction of finding a beautiful vista and sharing it, but don't you wish there was at least a film can to sign?
I'll elaborate my thoughts as I hear from others.

For me, it doesn't have the attraction of geocaching. For me, geocaching isn't JUST about the location, but also the cleverness of the hide, the mental and physical efforts to get there, and that feeling of discovery and exploration that I get on almost all caches. Somehow, determining the coordinates of my local McDonald's (yes, this is an actual Waypointing category

) or an abandoned drive-in theater, won't cut it for me. (You'll notice I have no locationless caches in my profile

). That said, I am sure that others will really enjoy this activity. It just doesn't appeal to me.

I too am not that excited about it.
I need to find something that's hidden, not something that's just there.
Just my personal feeling ... I still think it's neat that they've created it for those that are in to it.

Yeah, I can't exactly say that I'm ecstatic about it. I'm wishing I'd discovered locationless a bit earlier. We went to the Moab area last fall(wish we were into caching back then) and it would have been interesting to have coords to all the arches in the area. I would see this as a supplement and not a replacement to sites dedicated to this. Just because someone geocaches doesn't mean I would trust their ratings when halfway across the country.
I'm definitely of the mind there should be a cache if I just hiked two miles, but trying to be equal, picture waymarking all the waterfalls in northern Wisconsin. More like a hiker's log with an online database. If it ends up being a tour book & restaurant guide, I won't be using it. Still looking for more opinions.

For me... Not interested. True, the numbers sure are fun to watch add up, but it's the thrill of the hunt or is it the frustration??!! LOL Sure, it's nice to SEE
stuff and take a great hike, but it's really kewl when you can go in search of something.

I guess I could sort of compare it to Deer/bird hunting w/o a gun. It would be like going out during hunting season, get a nice hike in with hopes to get something but there ya are and that's it. Haven't seen too make hunters take down a deer or bird by hand LOL

Maybe not the best analogy, but I guess you can understand what I mean.

My 2 cent and a buck more... hey it's the season for giving LOL

As of right now, the Ecorangers have no desire to get into waymarking. It doesn't appeal to us. But I'm sure others out there are doing it and loving it. Tami

I don't really see it in the same category as geocaching at all. But I think there can be some good uses for it as the location database that it is. And maybe even as a travel guide. True you may not trust a person 500miles away as to the quality of the location, but that is what the other logs are for.

We, and most my family, travel with our dogs and this can give a much better idea of where off-leash dog parks are, since there isn't really any other good way to find them for us if there isn't a cache there with dog park in its title.

could be used for placing caches as well? such as finding more places to go along with your series, such as waterfalls.

Of course their site needs some further work, bring it more inline with the geocaching site in terms of providing distances, etc.

Well, I was thinking someone would have a positive opinion on this, but I see we all agree. I've hiked and climbed and kayaked all over the country and I think I've developed a fine instinct for finding pretty places without any help. I got into geocaching because of the thrill of the hunt, and somehow just going to empty coords would feel like a DNF. I'll plan another backpacking trip instead.

While I can agree that waymarking does not fit into the idea of geoCACHING, both geocaching and waymarking can be great ways to take people to places they may never have gone on their own. A little help can always lead to a great treasure. I think waymarking may be the 21st century addition to the maps, pamphlets, books, etc. that we all have used over the years to plan our vacactions, hikes, trips, excursions, etc.

I'll continue geocaching and enjoy the places while I find caches there. Maybe the yellow pages of coords will come in handy for non-geocaching folks. I see few people making a transition or making waymarking a higher priority than the geocaching that they have come to enjoy.

While there will probably be some good places marked out there they will be swamped probably by the thousands of parking lots and fast food chains that someone thought others would like to know about.

I played with the idea of waymarking every Walgreens that I encountered (because there's so darn many of them!!) but realized that I was just doing it to be obnoxious.

That's what www.walgreens.com/storelocator/find.jsp is for.

I haven't spent much time looking it over- but the few minutes I did it seemed to me to be more of an attempt to create lists of information that could later be saleable.
