Hello! My Geocaching team just came back from a caching trip that included caching in Wisconson. While we were there we did a cache at a Wisconson welocme center. It just so happens that the people who run this center were put in charge of a committee to contact you so that you can place caches at ALL the welcome centers.

I told them that we were from New York, but I would try to contact someone from Your organization to get in touch with them. How cool would that be...blanket permission to place caches all over ther state.

If you would like the information, please call me or email me and I will pass it along to you.

Happy Trails!

Hi there...yes, that's very cool. I'm sure cachers all over Wisconsin will be glad to hear this...especially the ones near the rest areas and Welcome Centers.

This is interesting considering some rest areas have banned geocaching.

Not so sure if the the spam issues are as bad as they have been made out to be M.B. I have posted one of my e-mail addresses in the past and have not received any spam.

All I know about this is what we were told and what was asked of us! We only did a few caches in Wisconsin. We were on a caching marathon weekend! One of your area cachers emailed me this afternoon and asked for the contact information. I passed it along to them. Hopefully it will pan out to something. If not..oh well, at least we tried!! BTW.. the welcome center was in La Crosse,WI.

Good luck!

....someone who might have a connection to the DOT through Wisconsin rest areas might have mentioned something about geocaching and rest areas. Perhaps this information was passed onto others with more cloute, and the realization of what geocaches at rest stops might add to state tourism or whatever was recognized.....

I really do not know many other details except that they were finally glad to talk to someone who was there to do the cache. They knew it was there and they knew people were coming to find the cache. These folks were really interested and understood the value that the caches could bring to the state. That welcome center was a fountain of information on the state of Wisconsin and the activities within the state. I'm sure its all about the tourism. Its nice to see that some people realize that there are niches for all user groups......cachers, hikers, ATVers, bird watchers......there is room for us all!!! I wish New York was as open minded!!! Then again...I was only talking to people who are on the committee. This could turn out to be nothing. Only time will tell!!

Now let's not jumping into agreeing to place these caches ... I think each Welcome Center should need to complete some sort of form and pay an annual fee to the WGA. (I'm kidding!)

Has the board or anyone actually looked into this?

I know we have a few caches at welcome centers already but was wondering if we received a global WI ok.

I called ATV Girl today and it sounded like I was the first to ask.

It was nice to talk with you today! Hopefully the information that I gave you will be helpful! I am sure that the State is probably looking at this as another source of revenue. (Don't they all!!!)I think that there is room enough for it to be a win-win for everyone....the state, the cachers and the tourists. Good luck!

Happy Trails!

Also,

It is my understanding that the DOT has some type of memo out not allowing cachers to place caches on their property. The Welcome Centers are not part of DOT oddly enough.

Does anyone have something to this effect?

The rest area maintenance crew that I know has no problem with geocaches placed at either of their maintained rest areas -- and there is a geocache at each one!

I came across this info based upon my want to place a cache at two rest areas. I called the manager in charge of them and he not only said he knows about geocaching but he received a memo stating that they are not allowed on DOT property.

I know others have caches at rest areas and Welcome centers. I think these are great places for traveling cachers.

I was wondering if others ran into this ban which was told to me.

Many rest areas are only overseen by DOT, but are maintained by other organizations. I spent a few summers working at a couple rest areas as a supervisor. Got to wear the good ol' DOT uniform, but certainly wasn't a state employee. Just look for a sign posted that says, "this area maintained by....." or something to that effect. Those are the people to ask!
