There you go...
Buy something made to have water in it to keep the water out.

Really simple if you think about it - if water can seep out it sure can seep in.

I've never posted to this forum before so this is as much a test as it is my observations on the topic. Once, and only one time, I found a decon container where the contents were dry. I've found a lot of these containers, they are tough to close correctly and just don't work for caches. Old news I'm sure. Same goes for Pvc tubes but if you insulate them that seems to stop the condensation. I like the Lock n Locks but folks seem to have trouble closing them too. In the end, nothing beats an ammo can but Lock n Lock has been my choice as a replacement.

Greenback - you are more than welcome to these forums! You're a bit of a legend as I have been posting the greatness of your "Lord of the Rings" series for years! Amy and I have found 10 of your Illinois caches over the years.

To the WGA - please welcome this man with open arms. He truly knows of what he speaks.

Yep! we have crossed paths with the man a few times. He hangs with a pretty tough crowd too. Trudy & I will share our cheese with these flatlanders any day.

I ordered a couple decon containers and the ammo sub-assembly pictured above. The decon containers do appear nice and sturdy as advertised, but do indeed lack a sealing gasket, so when these are deployed, I will make certain to freezer-bag the contents. The sub-assembly tubes, however, do have a rubber gasket on the lid, and would appear to be nice and weathertight for outdoor use. If it's difficult to judge scale from the above picture, they are almost identically sized to a 24-oz. plastic soda bottle, the kind used most commonly sold in 6-packs.

Will these ammo sub-assembly cans hold a typical small spiral log book?

I would use the 3x5 size, or smaller, with the binding down the long side, like a book, not along the top. That way, if it needs to, the book can curl around the perimeter without bending the spine/wire. The interior diameter is approx. 2.5 inches.

Of course, I am not GUARANTEEING that these are weatherproof, just that they APPEAR to be extra sturdy and more weatherproof than Rubbermaid.
