Hello all,

I am new to this board, in fact this is my first post. I was out caching with my F-I-L yesterterday. When looking for a chache when he read ground zero with his unit mine was reading 110' the other way. My 60cs has always been very accurate before, around 10' or so. Why would this one cache be different? Of course I checked the coords when I got home, they were correct. And there was no canopy or other obstructions around. And my f-i-l's gps'r did read accurately and we found the cache?

I am just wondering if this is a one time anomoly, or is this something that happens regularly?

Was out today with some having a 60CS, and he was always off in the wrong direction by himself. Sometimes as much as 100 feet.

Just of flux? Cloud cover? Who knows?

I have ran into certain times the GPSr is way off. Who knows why, you never know what could be doing it. Could be something reflecting the signals and confusing the location.

Just remember that a rule of thumb is that the placer could be off several yards too.

We've also had ours off by around 100' for some time before it figures things out. and I've had it that way even with several strong signals.

our most frequent time of issues is around dusk. We tried a cache and gave up after over 30minutes. found out we were never very close to it. I wonder how much the eastern WAAS satellite move has to do with any of it?

Thanks for the replies, kind of what i was thinking. I guess I was sort of looking for an excuse to go out and buy the new 60scx...

One other quick question, What do the little "d" in the bars on the satalite page mean? I am assuming that means they are locked in? And, what satalite number is the WAAS? I am never sure when I am WAAS enabled or not?

Thanks again!

Sounds like you are using a Garmin Etrex. The D means "Differential" which means the WAAS is connected to those signals marked with the D. I don't think the WAAS satellite uses the same numbering system as the GPS satellites.

Try finding a cache without using WAAS. I don't use it on my 60CS and have had good luck. Some people swear by WAAS, and some think it's overrated.

I remember my old gpsr had pretty buggy software in it, anytime I would see strange behaviour looking for a firmware update or just resetting the unit and reloading the firmware seemed to clear out the bugs.
I see on garmins site there was a firmware update for the 60cs on April 19, 2006 software version 4.10, I would try that and see if things improve.

I've been out caching with 3 people with 3 different GPSs, two Garmins: a GPSIII and a E-trex legend, and Magellan: a 315(fairly old).

The GPSs all seem to read different bearings and distances while approaching the cache, but if we all stopped, we would come up to match within a decent margin of error eventually. I don't think it is the machines, I think it is the way the programming processes with the information it gathers.

Maybe try what I do: I stand still, until the reading settles down, then head off in the right direction using a compass.

Maybe I should just look harder. LOL..

added:
BTW, has anyone experienced a complete blackout? A year or more back, I had 2 GPSs tracking while driving. Then both of them lost lock with NO signal strength. One was connected to my laptop, tracking on a map, and it 'jumped a gap' for about 1/4 mile. There wasn't any cover, we were riding along a 4 lane divided highway. What happened?
