Suggest a place for a WGA event

I don’t recall a way to suggest a place for a WGA event so I will just make this post.

For the upcoming year, it would be nice if the Flambeau River State Forest be considered for the next picnic or campout.

What a WONDERFUL suggestion! That's a beautiful area down that way, and, even though it's several hours from here, it's a much more realistic drive for us than the location of this year's get-together.

wild cat mountain is a real nice area there is something for every one there there is flat areas and big hills to climb if you want a work out and enough ticks to go around

Keep the suggestions coming.

Although good scenery and wonderful hiking opportunities are great, in order to accomodate a group of our size we need to keep a close eye on some other things......

For a campout:
1. Near the location of willing-to-help-out WGA geocachers.
2. Space for 100 or so tent campers. (group sites large or close together)
3. PARKING for 100 or so tent campers.
4. A Shelter to have registration, day-cachers & pancake breakfast at.
5. Parking for a ba-zillion people near the shelter (day-cachers).

From all of the campouts I have attended, I would say that Lake Wissota had the best facilities.

For the picnic:
1. Near the location of willing-help-out WGA geocachers.

3. Parking for a ba-zillion people near the shelter.

From all of the campouts I have attended, none (facilities wise) stands out. They all have worked out pretty well.

As far as a location for next year's campout, I've heard from a number (more than 2 Smile

) of members who would like to see it return to Governor Dodge State Park. We know the group campsites there will work for our event, and there are numerous reservable shelters. The park has tons of land and trails so the cache hides can be spread out, plus a lot of "brown lines" (Arn's terminology Smile

) or terrain changes to make things interesting. It is an easy drive for Madison folks, and it is not too bad for SE and central Wisconsin folks either.

Other suggestions I've heard include Wyalusing (great park but too far away for most people IMHO), Wildcat Mountain (smaller group campsites, a longer drive for most folks, but would still probably be a good choice), and New Glarus Woods (has group sites, but not enough land and trails).

Devils Lake Sate Park is a great spot as well. http://www.dnr.state.wi.us/ORG/land/parks/specific/devilslake/Though it is very busy during the Summer months. Good commute times even from SE WI. Not to mention some of the states best permenant caches and a ton of other things to do nearby.

This would be a great place! Also, there are some Federal campgrounds around the Clam Lake-Cable-Drummond ares too. You would be in the middle of the Chequamegon Forrest and also very near Sawyer County Forrest so there would be LOTS of room for Temp caches. There is also Copper Falls State Park close by also.

The suggestions are very welcome. It shows great interest in these activities. But please be mindful of the fact that with few exceptions, the people who set these events up live within 100 miles of Milwaukee. Events in the other corner of the State can be very taxing on those who have been hosting them. Locations closer to the center of the State are certainly more reasonable.

I would be glad to help, But I thought this was the WISCONSIN Geocaching Association, not the SOUTHERN WISCONSIN Geocaching Association. It is not my intent to derail this thread. I have stated my concerns in the proper areas before. What's the use of haveing a place to suggest a site, if it doesn't matter anyways, because you know the event is more likely going to happen south of Eau Claire anyways.

If you are serious about having a WGA event in your neck of the woods, get out and do a little legwork.

For starters, head on out to the venue that you think would be a great place to have a picnic or campout.

See if there is...

- Adequate room for 100 or more tent campers at a group site(s).
- Parking for 100 tent campers.
- A shelter with lots-n-lots of parking nearby for registrations & such.

Post pictures and comments here with your findings.

You could even talk to the park management, and see if they would be willing to host a group such as ours.

Keep in mind that you may be asked to help out with scouting the park as the event time approaches, helping temp hides, and providing local info (gas, groceries, hotels etc..).

Now that's not really fair seeing as how both of the last two camp-outs were held north of Eau Claire (if you draw a line across the state, Peninsula State Park is indeed north of EC).
