Interesting. I know when I originally wrote up a summary for my corn maze event, the reviewer (Wis Kid I think) wanted to know what fees were involved. Maybe he can chime in. Perhaps certain fees are ok?

I never got any farther with my event, so I never investigated it.

Actually, the reason the Fox 6 event is not listed is because they didn't submit it. If you reread the thread, you will see that they specifically stated that they would not submit it as an event to the website. Nothing sinister going on here.

As far as fees go, you can always charge fees for expenses for a geocaching event. What is more questionable is having an event at a site which charges fees. Much like a geocache, it is acceptable to have an event in a public park which charges a user fee to get in, like the Mosquito Brook Nature Center. What you cannot do is hold an event at a private facility, like, for example, Noah's Ark, which charges admission. You can obviously hold an event at a place which charges for food, but this is an exception. Private campgrounds which allow non-campers admission would be ok, but not places where they charge just to come on the property. Semiprivate locations (like the Schlitz Audubon Center) are very tricky. We would treat them on a case by case basis. I think we would generally look favorably on such a location.

So, what if you actually want to have a group geocaching outing to Noah's Ark? You can't, unless you are clever. While you can't technically have a water sliding event there, you could have a Geocaching Pep Rally in the Noah's Ark parking lot (free admission if I recall correctly) for say 30 minutes. Everybody signs the log, says "Yea, Rah, Geocaching", and geogabs for the remaining time. If, after the 30 minutes are over, everyone decides to go ride the water slides, well, that has nothing to do with the event. You just can't require that people pay the admission fee.

This same approach would apply to your Corn Maze question. Have a dinner event at a nearby restaurant. If everyone goes to the corn maze afterwards, well, so be it.

Please don't send me hate mail about how illogical these rules are. These are gc.com rules, not mine. The bottom line is that I never reject an event outright, but try to work with the placer to bring their idea within the rules. Basically, an event needs to be a gathering of geocachers, organized by geocachers, and attended by geocachers. Like any other cache, the cache page cannot be used to promote a commercial enterprise (unless you get permission from Groundspeak first). It can't be tacked onto something else (like an air show or an orienteering meet), and it can't JUST be a group cache hunt (although you can have a geocaching pep rally at a park and ride lot and then if everybody just decides they want to go hunt caches afterwards, this is ok. I just report the rules, I don't make em up!) Twisted Evil Rolling Eyes

Not to add to the rules, but I think to clarify SOME of the goal of them (just SOME I said) ... I don't think they want a fee to ever create a "profit situation" or a "fundraiser situation".

From what I understand ... if I had an event and charged $5 because my expenses were around $5 per person, that would TYPICALLY be fine. But I can't charge $10 to cover $5 worth of expenses and profit $5 ... EVEN if I planned on giving the $5 to a worthwhile organization (ie. Friends of blah blah park). But as I understand it, I could charge $5 to attend and have a donation basket benefiting the organization.

Another approach ... scrap the whole idea of charging, but have a donation basket at the event with the idea that it should cover expenses with the excess benefiting the organization.

Anyone interested in having a family member pick up a coin for us?

We are trying to decide what to do -

GONIL Picnic, or FOX Cachefest. We really want one of those coins, being as tho we are serious coin addicts.

So.. if anyone can volunteer a family member, we will pay the fee for their participation so we can get a coin too!!

(Or trades anyone???)

Four of us are planning on going. (Stressing the word planning) If we are allowed 4 coins as a team, you can have one of ours. It may cost you a favor in the future though! wink

You're right. It didn't say if it was one coin per person, or one per group/family.

Although I did read there was a prize for the most coins. If we stamp our booklet 5 times at each cache, will that count as 150 stamps? Very Happy

(JK, I'm sure they mean the coin is the prize and everyone who gets all 30 stamps will win one.)

Yes, and yes.

Actually, if you read the fine print on those passes it says that you may not use it for special events, which I would assume this is.

As long as it doesnt rain, we are going now. In fact, I think we are hooking up with Greendale4x4 that morning. I think he wants to laugh at our cache finding antics.

To any of you going or planning to go, I e-mailed Jim Hyatt to ask about downloading coordinates. The coordinates will have to be entered by hand, but he did e-mail all 30 sets. If anyone is interested in being prepared, PM me and I'll e-mail them to you.

Just gave them the credit card number. The only thing stopping us now would be blood loss from the flying black horde. What is up with the mosquitos? Made it through two stages of a multi last weekend and gave up because we ran out of repellent.

I noticed Target was clearancing out there bug stuff, so we stocked up. I have a feeling we'll need it badly on Saturday.

Pray for wind.

Thanks to The5Xplorers, I have converted the coord's to GPX format. Somebody might want to verify my conversions. I take no responsibility if they are off, or if they change locations on Saturday.

I also posted a picture of their locations.

Those don't look too hard. We're hoping to do all 30, along with the two permanent caches out there.

So nice to see you added the mosquito to scale. Very Happy
