Hello fellow cachers,

The Rice Lake Chamber of Commerce is sponsoring a geocaching event in conjunction with their Fall Family Festival/Taterfest events that runs through Oct. 21.

It will be run similarly to the CV event in that you can pick up a passbook at either the Chamber (37 S. Main St., Rice Lake) or at Rainbow Home Center (1124 Hammond Ave, Rice lake) beginning Sept. 1st. All caches are currently listed on GC.com and each has a code placed on the inside of the cache. All you need to do is write the code on your passbook for each cache that you find. Once you're done, simply turn the passbook back in to the Chamber to be enterd in a drawing for prizes. You will be entered once for each cache that you find. Prizes include outdoor gear and pottery. This is a great excuse to visit the Rice lake area and explore the vast wild areas of the Blue Hills and the scenic lakes and forests of Rusk, Barron and Chippewa counties! For more information feel free to call the Rice Lake Chamber of Commerce at 715-234-2126. Hope to see you on the trail!

Great to see Rice Lake getting a few more caches. The last time I looked at that town there was only a single cache. I will plan on finding some caches near Rice Lake after 9/1.

they do not appear to be putting out any new caches, just putting a "code" into some of the existing caches. I found one this past weekend, and it was just the code on a piece of blue tape in the existing geocache.

the tourism folks do not seem real well organized up there.

That's true, all caches are existing caches. For some reason they specifically wanted all existing caches for their first trial run. We'll see how it goes, but it doesn't give much of an incentive for those who have done alot of caching around there and have found most of the event caches. But, if you havn't done many up there........come on up!

Do you know if all of the event caches have their codes in yet? I was able to hit two caches in Rice Lake today while my wife was shopping. Neither of them had a code in them.

If anyone's interested, today I also dropped off a neat Hawaii geocoin in Rice Lake.

I found 4 or 5 up there last week, and only one did.

They might not place the codes till the first.

My brother lives near Rice Lake, and he is a baby cacher, so this might encourage him to get a few more finds. Cool

I spent a night last week with BadPaul and he told me that his cache(Yellow River Cache?) was a part of this event. I had tried to get to this cache last spring but forgot to put in the last way point.

I was in Rice Lake today and was able to find 6 of the entries. I have a copy of the passbook and could make a list of the caches as an on-line list apparently does not exist.

One of the caches didn't have a code???? Rolling Eyes I am not sure I am that interested in the contest to go back to the caches I had already found. Any idea what the prizes will be?

The lady in the Rice Lake Chamber of Commerce tourism building was very nice and knew exactly what I wanted when I asked.

Can we get some update as to how this event went? Was there good participation? What sort of prizes were offered? Were they happy about how the event? Will it happen again?

I was in the area several times but only had enough time to be able to find 20 of the 32 caches (partially because I usually picked up all the non-event caches in every area I went). However, because I mistakenly thought the event ran until the end of the month, I never submitted my codes. All in all, I thought the caches were well chosen but I was surprised by how much driving was required with hardly any caches in the city of Rice Lake itself. I would hope that if they did it again, new caches would be nice.

I think you hit it on the head, elfdoctors! I was pleasantly surprised by how much I enjoyed the caches that were part of the event. The amount of driving though, drove me nuts! The "Rice Lake" event spanned from Prairie Farm to Exeland east to west and New Auburn to Turtle Lake north and south. Holy gas guzzler! I also failed to turn in my passbook on time. The last day I cached the event was the last day of the event and I finished after closing hours of the Chamber. So, I mailed it in but by the time it got there they had already done the drawing! Oh well, I have a contact over there and I will check with her to see how participation was, what they gave away, whether they will do it next year and whether they plan to add new caches next time.

On a very positive note, I noticed some logs from first time geocachers during the event, which may be a main focus of these things anyway; introducing new people to the sport. Having other organizations help spread the word about geocaching I think helps to promote it to newbies in a way beyond what we as a geocaching community can do on our own. Of course, seeking input from those in the know such as the WGA can only help make events such as these an even bigger success. Hopefully some ideas can be shared if they have a next one!
