Has anyone found a nice little program to download the entire site and save it locally to use it at whim on a laptop while caching? I haven't found anything for windows that works with the ASP script, and I'm currently reconfiguring my apache server to run ASP to see if wget on my unix box worked. So I'm just curious of anyone else has worked on this, and if they have been successful.

Entire site? Ouch...

Remember that Jeremy considers the data stored on his servers to be his property. While available for personal use by geocachers, downloading his entire site would quickly be noticed and could cause considerable problems.

One reason he resists this is that the data changes so quickly, you could easily have outdated cache pages 15 minutes after you downloaded it.

I personally limit myself to just downloading the pages for the caches I'm going after in the next couple of days.

I understand the property etc.. It would be only used for personal use so it would not (with my understanding) be violating anything. As for being noticed, that wouldn't bother me. I wouldn't be hiding (obviously) what I'm doing. But in reality, the amount of hits that site gets, it would require a specific search to notice it. That's besides the point though.

Yeah, the data changes very quickly. For the most part, I'd like to grab all the caches in my area, if not just Wi so that I could cron a script to check for updates every night or week etc. Having the logs is very benificial. I have all of the way points in Wisconsin, as of this past Saturday on my laptop ready to be uploaded to my gps, and converted into MS Streets and Trips, so when driving somewhere we can see a cache near go "hey, we've got some time pull up the page and lets check it out".

It's mainly for spontanitity. I tried printing out the closest 100 or so caches, but as you said it got outdated quickly.

Now if this would cause some huge problem with the admins at geocaching.com, I would of course -not- do it. I'm just trying to think of ways to make this work for us, I don't want to cause some sort of reformation Image

And from what I've discovered, making a script to grab all pages at X zipcode would download them, but they are not easily referencable. The page ID is different then the waypoint ID. Which, may be intentional to thwort activities like this.

Needless to say, so far it seems to be a lot more work than I have time to deal with. That, and my scripting skills aren't where they need to be. Hehe

Maybe I'll just pick up a cell phone adapter to dial out to get pages on the fly with my laptop :P

Thanks for the comments,

Nick

If you have a PDA you can get what you need.
I have a list of caches, with all info, the cheat, and some logs, for my zip code e-mailed to me once a week.

This is from Geocaching.com:

" You now have the ability to create Pocket Queries. A Pocket Query allows you to have a list of caches from a customized search, generate a waypoint file and/or eBook you can carry with you. If you haven't already, visit the Pocket Query Generator to learn more."

Actually, they aren't different.

For example, the Cache Blue as the sky has an ID of 44437 and a waypoint of GCAD95.

The GC part just means GeoCache, so ignore it, and you will see that AD95 is the same as 44437.

Right?... Oh okay, so the waypoint is in hex (base 16) and the ID is in decimal (base 10). Just fire up Calc in Windows, under View select Scientific mode, and then type in 44437 and click on the Hex dot and you will see its AD95.

Haha

Wow do I feel embaressed for not thinking of it being in hex. Hmm that will make everything easier if I persue this Image

Concerning the palm software, yes I've seen that but it then requires a person to own a palm. Image Although, I will look to see if there are any palm software emulators...

Now in a year or so we'll have a palm as Katrina will be needing it for pharmacy school.. but until then I will be working on an alternative Image

Thanks for the input!

Hex? Base 16? Calc? I guess I'll stick to working with words. But I'm glad the geeks are my friends!

I was just considering a PDA (planning a 1-2 month trip to FL).. but realized that I'd be printing out each page anyways because of the personal memories and the notes I write upon each page.. Ever since I started caching.. I've printed them on a single page (some needed two).. I love looking at some of those crumpled/water stained sheets and remembering how fun/frustrating they were.. some I've even added my printout pictures on the back of the page.. it makes a very personalized scrapbook of my adventures..

What I did when I first started was to just print each of Wisconsin's fact sheets without logs (kept in my Travel Binder).. even though they were not updated often.. those that were updated/not found/etc were the ones that I just returned to (after updating the sheet) upon my return.

It just seems like such a great way to store all my memories.. and I always take my GPS and binder everywhere I go.. so that I can just "notice" a cache nearby and if I have time.. can enjoy that side trip.

Now with less than 60 still undone in Wisconsin.. I found it easy to just print out Chicago's and a bunch of the caches west of the Mississippi... it was sad to see my binder almost empty (grins) so I had to do it (smiles)..

I really have not had many caches that couldn't be done without having logs along.. one I did really needed the logs on.. (The Three Ribs in Wausau.. someone had to move the last cache to a safer spot and the author never updated that info. I actually had the time to walk back to the second log location to add that 'move' into that logbook.. just incase another came along and didn't realize that it was moved or actually read through the logs)

All in all.. I can't see me even wishing to go hi-tek (PDA) or changing my system.. I can instantly find a cache page in my binder and be out of the car on the hunt within moments. And if using a few month old sheet didn't work for me.. it always gave me a reason to return and enjoy the location all over again.. didn't happen that often..

So, just starting.. I had every Wisconsin cache printed page and all Wisconsin waypoints loaded in my GPS... and I still do (grins)

Hope I made sense.. (grins)..
