Hiking boots

I want to treat myself to a decent pair of short boots for hiking. I've checked the geocaching.com posts but I want to go to a store and try on the boots. About the only special need I want it semi-waterproof for those occasional wet mushies we step into on a cache. I'm looking for a place in the Waukesha area or will travel for a great deal. Anyone know if that place in Blackearth is good for boots?

Dunham's had a sale last week, not sure if it's still on -- buy 1 pair of athletic shoes and get the second for 1/2 price. My son need new shoes so I took him there. I got a pair of Everest hiking boots. Originally $39.99, marked down to $19.99 and with the 1/2 price deal I got 'em for $9.98! If they fall apart by the end of the year they're still a good deal.

The Boot Barn in Black Earth has just about everything, from sales to top of the line. So there's a good selection and any can be tried on. We usually get ours at REI near West Towne Mall in Madison. Good boots and good selection, but not exactly inexpensive. Not sure what's on sale now.

Best pair of hiking boots I ever had were from Eddie Bauer and called "Appalachian Trail" and oddly they fell apart on the Appalachian trail - so much for a name!
I picked up my last pair at Gander Mountain - Lacrosse Brand and they have held up very well on quite a few mountain trails and were not very expensive (around $100) as hiking boots go.

After last year's "Poker Dash for Cache" and several humongous blisters on my feet from old athletic shoes, I treated myself to a good pair of hiking boots. On recommendation of a co-worker I went to REI. The people there were very helpful, and they even have a place where you can walk on some very un-even terrain, which actually really helped pick out the right boots. Personally I settled on a pair made by "Lowa", although the REI brand was a very close second. Hope this helps.
