I've been getting daily windows updates the last week or so for my XP operating system. The last one was a large file to make Internet Explorer more secure. Well, since I uploaded that, cookies do not work on this site anymore! In fact when I log into the board forum, it recognizes my passwords but bumps me back to the login screen. My security is set low. Oh yes, I forgot to mention that I removed my Black Ice firewall and loaded Road Runner's free virus program and firewall when this happened. Cookies seems to be working on other sites and I can get into the board forum on my work computer, however I did just download that IE patch today and didn't try to get in after doing so. Thoughts?

I couldn't tell you what may be causing you to lose your cookies... ok bad pun. If its just the WGA site thats the problem I would suggest going to Internet Options>Privacy> on the bottom is a button marked [edit] clicking that will take you to where you can manually manage your cookies (blacklist/whitelist) via IE. If you have other programs intercepting them though, this may not help.

If you're looking for a really good, free firewall I would suggest Zone Alarm. I have used it for several years now with huge success and it is easy to use even for the beginner.

Also if you want to test your firewalls capabilities go to http://grc.com and run thier ShieldsUp! tests. Good stuff there.

Go to Control Panel>Network & Internet Connections>Internet Connections>Internet Options>Security>Trusted Sites> and then add the URL for the WGA site to your list of trusted sites.

I tried that and got the message that it must be a secure site and be prefixed with https. No luck there. I've enabled first and third party cookies and they seem to work on my homepages. The boards keep track of what topics have new messages but the individual message folders don't turn pink. I've looked over the internet options for privacy and security and am puzzled. Guess I'll keep checking boxes until it works.

I went back an looked close and found I could click a box and eliminate the secure site requirement. I have the green circle and check mark and Trusted sites on the bottom of the browser now, but still keep getting recognized and returned back to the login screen. Bah!

I shut down my new firewall and now I can get in. Can anyone explain that to me?

Sometimes the firewalls go an extra step and block cookies, ads, popups, etc. Mine (Zone Alarm) does those things as well but everything should be customizable allowing you to turn off that "feature." Funny thing, computers that is... Image

The solution was to uninstall the EZ Firewall from Road Runner and install the old one that I used. Life is good again!
