"Abandoned" places

I don't know why but I have this infatuation with abandoned places. I think they are cool and eerie in some cases. So what I'm wondering is if people have some recommended caches that are near, in, or around abandoned places. I'm talking bridges ,towers, houses, etc. etc. I would prefer towards southern WI but would like to find out about any. I don't want to know about abandoned drug houses in the middle of some city. I'm talking lost civilizations out in the woods type of stuff.

Ive seen some caches that were near ghost towns and stuff and thought they looked very cool so I'm just wondering if there are any around here.

There's actually a bunch of them up here if you happen to trek north in the future. Some of my favorites are:

GC126TB Reesebe Dam - Abandoned homestead and dam on Eau Claire River. Dam site really neat. Never gets visited.

GCZ4TQ Silverbrook Treasure - Abandoned farm and old mansion site with a nice waterfall to boot! Interstate State park. The trail is the original abandoned road from Osceola to St Croix falls.

GC12FBV I'm Still Standing - Very clever Mutsley and Crew cache at site of old farmstead. Interstate State Park.

GCTFWT Ruins at half Moon Lake - Ruins of old lumber mill. Right in the middle of Eau Claire, but back in the woods and way out of site. Hidden spot not many locals know about.

GCTP4X Porterville History on the Chippewa River Trail. - Classic ghost town location with historical plaque. On a bike trail with many AWESOME caches along it.

GCXM0C - Lone Grave - Very eerie site in the middle of nowhere. Single grave of an infant that is frequented often by locals. You have to see it to believe it.

GC10G4M - Pipestone Quarry. Near Rice Lake. Abandoned quarry once used by the Ojibwa 2000 years ago, one of only 3 or 4 known pipestone quarries in the country.

GCT82X - North Country Trail: Swedish Settlement. Abandoned settlement WAY back in the woods along NCT. 4-5 foundations plus old spring house still standing. Many artifacts remain. Rarely visited.

Excellent! just the kind of stuff I'm looking for. Keep it coming. I kinda figured the really cool stuff would be more north. I will someday get up there for some caching.

Berkshire Mine is one of my caches near Mellen. at the cache site are the ruins of the old mining operation, a few mine shafts are in the area too... plus 2 other caches on the hike to make it worth it

These are up north as well. Near Boulder Junction and Sayner.

"Basement Full of Water" - GC12V5R is one I did the other day. I actually trie dlast winter but there was too much snow. It's neat becuase it's an old farmhouse that existed before the dam was built. Theres the remains of a barn on what is now an island close to the house and I guess there's remains of a silo underwater now too. Kind of neat to check out. Makes me wonder how many other oddities there are under the water becuase of the dam.

My favorite of this type of cache is Subterranian Home Sick Blues GC12W18 in northeastern WI.

I have caches at several ruins around northwestern WI but the one which gets the most raves seems to be Paint Mine Ruins GC12W18

There is a good one in Brown County, Smith Homestead, GC15ZV4.

We found this one in the NW quarter of the state - GCPJTX - the cache page gives great detail of the land's original use.

The caches at Harrington Beach are among scattered ruins of a now lost city.

I did that one yesterday. First waypoint is at an abandoned school, the second is at a abandoned mill. Very cool to hear the water running over the mill dam, right beneath your feet.

One in South Central Wisconsin is Devil's Tea Table GCD68B which will take you by an old abandoned grist mill.

Another is Old Yeller Cellar GCGQRB, near a root cellar of an old homestead.

Merry Christmas Mine Hill GC915C doesn't have ruins, but you can see remnants of old lead mines.
