The Venture Crew has experience with geocaching as we've set up temporary caches as an afternoon activity before. But, I think they would volunteer to help pick up trash as a service project. If it were me, I would not focus on temps for geocachers coming to the CITO- if you're coming to do public service you may as well concentrate on public service. You might however, get more exposure by having temps set up to do a little Geocaching 101 for folks as well as the CITO. Then have folks ready to help show others what caching is all about, how to use their GPSr (trust me there are a LOT of GPSr's out there sitting in closets because folks gave up trying to figure them out). It would be best to have temps for that purpose because you wouldn't want to compromise actual caches.

So it's something to think about anyway. Geocachers plan to clean up the parks and if you'd like to know more about geocaching, or how to use your GPSr, stop in on such and such a date...

Hmm, that's an interesting suggestion. Couple the event with a geocaching 101 type thing. I know some other members of the WGA have had some successful "classes" with this. If someone would be willing to do that, it might be neat. But Personally, I'm not sure how much of a benefit it would be... I don't think we're looking at general community members coming to do volunteer work and learn about a new hobby, I think we're looking at geocachers who already know the sport (at varying levels of experience) coming to play their game and do the community (and themselves) a service at the same time.

My motivation behind the temps is to put people in areas of the parks where /near where the garbage is. It's not only an easy way to "steer" them to where they need to go, but to give them some enjoyment at the end of the trail as well. for those not interested, they still don't have to find the cache, but they would know where to go.

If someone unfamiliar with caching tags along, I think that would be great... and I believe like you mentioned... we could team them up with experienced cachers and they could learn from them. Even though we might get people like that, I'm not sure how we would market to people like that.

I like your idea to place temps where you want people to seek garbage. It is also acts as friendly reminder that we can practice CITO while we seek caches.

Be careful about combining too many different 'events'.

A CITO by itself is ok - most cachers will plan on hunting local caches before or after.

If you really like the idea of a Geocaching 101, schedule it for a separate day. Gives you more time to concentrate on one thing at a time.

BTW, submit your event to the WGA events page - helps get you more state wide exposure, than just the GC listing.

Could the CITO host have a "Junk Hunt"? A small list of items,i.e.;pop top, old shoe, 2X4, gum wrapper, etc. for the trash picker-uppers to look for, as a sort of game while picking up stuff? (I did find something rather discusting last year. Ask Hemi...he had the mechanical grabber to pick it up!)
So instead of seeking caches, you get prizes for picking up trash. And no downloading!!
Just a thought.

Thanks GMO for spearheading this. I am positive that this will be a great event.

More details will be out in the next couple of days, once the board minutes are published, and the cache page is published, but the Board did decide at our last meeting a week and a half ago, to make the Wausau CITO event our next WGA Regional Event.

GMO has done a fantastic job planning this event, and the WGA Board was eager to lend a hand, provide some financial support, and get it listed as a WGA Regional event. There will be a ton of door prizes and it ought to be a great CITO event. So mark your calenders now for May 2 and plan on attending a great event. I know I will be there.

I don't think that you even want to put that down on any list. Just trash it.

There will be a door prize for the most "unique" piece of trash found and retrieved. Majority vote rules Wink But that will be the extent of it. We don't want to create too much of a bio-hazard. Smile

That will be on the page coming out soon, like Z said. And thank you, Z for adding your post. The WGA support of this event will add to it in so many ways. I'm really looking forward to it.

UPDATE (and bump I guess): We are well underway with plans for the CITO event and it looks like it's going to be alot of fun. We've got the areas officially selected that we will be CITOing and most are within walking distance of base camp, though walking is not necessary.

We've got a great selection of prizes and there will be even more than what's listed on the cache description. The afternoon will have lots of opportunities to team up and do some cache tours or general caching. The company will be great so if you don't have plans for May 2nd, mark the CITO on your calendar and come join us! [GC1N3AC]

The temp caches are coming together and there are some clever ideas coming to fruition. No doubt you will be entertained. There will also be some new permanent caches coming out in town around that time period. The parks we will be in also feature permanent caches that you can grab while you're there if you haven't already.

So that's the news for now. I also hear that baby Zumette is going to make her first event appearance. That will be exciting Smile She'll probably have her Garmin in one hand and a bottle in the other!

Thanks everybody... I'll keep you posted.

Another Bulletin! West Side Tasty Treat (Best Soft Serve ice cream in town IMO) is offering every CITO participant a 10% discount with the mention of the event. PLUS a 10% off coupon for your next visit. There will be a temp cache located at the ice cream shop to make it easy to find.
