G'cache [Good Catch!] Lil' Otter!

BTW, these postings are not proprietary. You or anyone else who catches a fellow cacher achieving something should feel free to post it. I welcome the relief. I love to acknowledge these things, but finding others beating me to the punch is a treat to me. This means that If I should miss one, it will not go unnoticed.

Thank you for bringing this one to our attention.

So I've wondered, how do you keep track? Do you have a list of Wisconsin cachers and manually check to see who is nearing a century mark and monitor it closer when someone gets close?

Has JV written a script to pull find counts?

I was wondering if the recent modifications to the user stats page on GC.com would make it more difficult to check.

However you do it, kudos go out to the two of you for your recognition which certainly provides incentive for cachers to go after those milestones! Thanks!

JV had used a script in the past. It is probably somewhat dated now. Lil' Otter caught this one at one of her caches - King Among Men - I believe. I havn't checked it yet.

I have a list of Wisconsin cachers in an Excel spreadsheet with a dated count of caches. A rather simple arrangement, that I update manually, daily. It takes from one to three hours a day to keep them current. The advantage I get from doing this is that it keeps me familiar with cachers and caches. Then too, I am somewhat of a detail nut.

Dear beast,

Thanks for your efforts in this area. It is neat to see mentions of progress and "milestones". I'm not sure how you do your daily updates but just in case you're not aware, I wanted to point out a potentially helpful feature:
http://www.geocaching.com/seek/nearest.aspx?ul=the%20lil%20otter

or
http://www.geocaching.com/seek/nearest.aspx?ul=jthorson

or any other user name can be used on the Geocaching.com site to bring up that user's log. Near the top is the text "Total Records:" followed by the number of logged "found" caches for that user. An enterprising individual could make a web page with a link for each of the Wisconsin cachers with a significant number of finds and quickly click through the links to see each cacher's total. A smarter individual (don't look to me) would write a perl or javascript to do it and capture the results then you could import them into your Excel spreadsheet directly. It is also possible that the results could be read directly into Excel using MS Visual Basic for Applications. This is the kind of stuff I used to do for fun before I bought a house and had kids ;-)

Of course, too much automation would take away your ability to actually read the logs and keep track of things...not necessarily a good thing.

Thanks again,
Steve K

Steve,

Thanks for the suggestion. The method I use is considerably less work than your method, but no where as simple as a script would be. I think I will stick with my method for a while. It allows me to identify new cachers as well. Searching on a user name would require that I have that name first.

From some where near the confluence of the Ohio, Monongahela and Allegheny Rivers,

the beast

The only problem with that is that archived caches are not counted in that total, so the total count would be off. For example, that total lists 662 for Jeff, but if you look at his latest log, he actually has 680.

A nicer way would be to link to that person's stats page, but that page appears to be unlinkable. (You can only link to the user info page.)
