Recommended Places To Eat In SW Wisconsin

This sticky forum topic is provided for WGA members to share their recommendations regarding good places to eat in this region.

When you make a recommendation, please provide as much information as you can. At a minimum we need the name of the restaurant, type of food served, and the city/town where it is located. We are all geocachers, so the coordinates of the establishment would also be helpful. Smile

Pete's Hamburger Stand (open seasonal)

Possibly the best hamburger I have ever eatten. NO cheese availble, but you can get onions, ketchup, mustard, salt and pepper. Tiny little shack that has been around for over 100 years now servin up the same family recipe burgers all along. No seatting available, no frills, just good burgers.

Expect to wait in line to get a burger, its right across the street from Starks sport shop, where you can buy a shotgun, ammo, and a 5th of Jack Daniels all at the same time if the mood strikes you Smile

Right between Culver's and the Dollar store on Highway 16 in the Country Market Parking lot is the Taco truck. A couple picnic tables right there for your dining pleasure. Tacos, Tortas, and Burritos. Great family runs it and great food. Taco's $1.50 each Burritos $5.50 ea I think. Check out the Mennonite Country Market for great bulk grocery shopping and wonderful meat case. Great Coulee Region caches along the way.

Trempealeau Hotel in Trempealeau Wisconsin.

This location is also the location of a virtual cache, so before dinner, you can snap your photo and claim another smiley. From the outside, this is an unassuming old hotel front in an old river town. Once inside and seated, you will experience excellent cuisine in a relaxed environment. If you like blackened fish or chicken, we can recommend these highly. The food is really cooked, not zapped, served with pride and local foods are used wherever possible.

Throughout the summer, they have music venues on the adjoining lawn. Great times! It's a place where you can enjoy a great meal, even in your caching clothes. Prices are moderate. I think when we went out for my birthday last fall, we had regular entrees, including my glass of wine, for less than $30.

Nelson Cheese Factory, Nelson Wisconsin

Nelson is a small town on the River Road (Highway 35) just across the bridge from Wabasha Minnesota. For a relaxed day of caching fun, ramble the WSQ caches in the area, try zuma's Gr8 River Road series, and check out the birthplace of Laura Ingalls Wilder in Lund. Plan your route to end us here around lunchtime. You can order good sandwiches to enjoy in the room overlooking the river or the old cold room. When you're finished eating, pick up some goodies to take home from the well stocked store, or have an ice cream cone for dessert. I've been here with birding crews after spending the morning at the Tiffany Wildlife Area (the largest unfragmented area of riverbottom habitat remaining in the state) and for late lunch after doing the many rural WSQs. Keep driving up the river road and you can enjoy the quaint town of Stockholm or Maiden Rock to feed your "artsy fartsy" soul.

Good sandwiches and simple lunch fare, tasty, tasty, tasty! Reasonably priced and unless you fell into the river, you can come as you are and not feel strange. There is a mix of the "mudducks" out for a drive and the folks actually out enjoying the environment here.

Driftless Cafe, Viroqua

If you're heading down toward the Kickapoo Valley to enjoy the awesome caching available, plan to end your day right here. The Driftless Cafe is locally owned, and features a rotating menu of mostly locally produced foods. Soups and sandwich type meals, but often there are dishes with a Mediterrean flavor, too.

The atmosphere is intimate and a little funky,with a tree or two "growing" right out of the floor. The food is delicious and prepared by hand, not a microwave. They often have live music featured in the evenings, and there is even an Irish trad session held here each Thursday.

If you're longing for your "hippie days," this is a fun place to eat. Even if you aren't....it's a fun place to enjoy good food. Casual atmosphere, you can come as you are. Prices are reasonable, too.

If you are in the area of the Kickapoo Valley Reserve head down to the Blue Goose. They have excellent pizza & ice cream. They are open Thursday to Saturday noon to 8:00pm and Sunday noon to 6:00pm

We enjoy visiting Dubuque, IA, but we always stop at Steve's Pizza, on the west end of the "main drag" in Platteville. Great pizza! Very Happy

Every time we've been in Prairie, we were part of the rendezvous and cooking over open fires. I think we should plan a road trip!

Along HWY 35 in the township of De Soto, WI is a small bar/restaurant called Great River Road House. We ate there Saturday afternoon while caching along the Mississippi River.

The sandwiches we had were outstanding and the pizzas that we saw being brought out (which seemed to be 90% of what was being ordered) looked fantastic. The atmosphere was very rustic with an old cabin look and feel. The wait staff was excellent and very attentive.

If your ever down along the Mississippi and you come across the Great River Road House don't hesitate to stop in, you won't regret it!!

Yeah, that's a great spot. I still contend that Trekkin' deliberately dumped me while in the canoe a couple of years ago so we could pass on by due to waterlogged clothing! Rolling Eyes
