The family will be taking an extended vacation into the far Northwestern Wisconsin area and then driving along the Mississippi River from Ashland to the WI/IL border.

Are there any MUST do caches? We are open to all types/difficulties except those requiring a boat. Thanks!

Wy Not Wyalusing? GC18DC

A classic (look at the GC number).
Classically laid out in a beautiful place.
You have not done caching in Wisconsin until you have done this cache.

One I liked for the views was DUCK (GCGAX2). It is not quite a drive up, but the views were great. I did it Labor Day weekend so the leaves were thinning out a little bit

If your going to Ashland, there are quite a few artesian well ECs there.

Also, NGLVC TB Hotel (GCQ1VD), at the Visitors Center, west of Ashland. Take a look at the Visitors Center for Great Lakes history. No admission charged, but donations accepted.

Almost Heaven (GCH12D) is a bit of a hike to St. Pete's Dome, but if the weather is good, the view won't disappoint.

NW Wisconsin like the Apostle Islands? Here is a classic in that corner of the state:

GC6F04 - Point Detour

If you mean NW Wisconsin like Superior, then check out Pattison and Amnicon Falls SPs:

GC1246 - Manitou Falls Cache (at the tallest waterfall in WI)

Also a nice one. Wink If this trip is soon, you can replace the blown up ammo box for me. Smile If you end up in this area, you might as well cross over into IA and visit Pikes Peak SP and find those caches, like:

GC18FMF - Pikes Peak Overlook EarthCache

I've also heard good things about T&B's Effigy Mounds EarthCache in IA, GC19697.

I also second the recommendation to visit GC5249 and the others in that same park as you travel down the Mississippi. After being introduced to Buena Vista Park by geocaching, I've stopped there over a half dozen times as I've traveled through that part of the state.

If northwestern WI includes Polk County, I would recommend Beadelake Crew's Gandy Dancer series which has two Cache of the month winners and a diversity of hides and containers. Also another COTM winner in Polk County is Nectar of the Gods in Osceola.

If northwestern WI includes Burnett County, I have many caches in picturesque areas including my Spongebob series.

I can confirm elfdoctors caches, as he adopted some of the ones I did. They're a bit north of the Mississippi, but right in the St Croix river area. Burnett County has seen a lot of work done to put a number of caches in scenic outdoor area by a number of people. They range from quite challenging to grab-n-go types!

Thanks all for the recs! Sounds like we're going to be in for a grand time. Never being to this part of the state, we're very excited to see what it all has to hold!
