Spider Island---Petenwell Lake area

We've been intrigued by this one for a long time, and since we were heading over this way to get sandlander's new letterbox and a few new ones in Buckhorn, we figured.....let's see what we can do.

I'm sure this takes on a different flavor given the time of year. It had rained, so it just added to the jungle feel on the island, and the water crossing is always a fun element. A little surprise once you find the cache, too, added recently I believe.

I note that it was Team Honeybunnie's 400th cache. Wow! Time flies, and really, not too many have visited it since they did.

That place is awesome! Be sure to read all the logs on the cache page. Lots of stories, including a trip to the ER by early visitors due to bee stings. Something about "spider island" makes people want to take lots of pictures there, too. Fun to read the different experiences people had at different times of the year. We went last fall and didn't get our feet wet at all. Oh, and at that time Team Honeybunnies had around 7900 finds, as we noted. Guess our visit was before the "surprise", though. Can't believe we attempted this 4 terrain, but it wasn't too bad for us.

this one has also been on my list of caches to conquer. last attempt for me was the end of February a day or so after the last snowfall which made for a real adventure getting to the island in the first place and seeing that I had begun the adventure a little too late in the day to persevere until the cache was found. I did not bring the flashlight along to find my way back in the dark, and the snow cover hid the many beacons near GZ to the point that to search each one would have taken several hours. Searched about for awhile hoping to get lucky but it was not to be.
Would have to say that was one of the more memorable DNFs I have logged and it only serves to be a motivator to get back out there for a whole new challenge with the liquid H2O this time instead of the frozen kind.
Might need to join forces on the next outing to tip the scales in the cacher's favor.

I would suggest road trip, but it appears T&B have already made the trip. Maybe the rest of us?

As some of you may know, I visit the area from time to time. Never gotten to "the other side" of the Petenwell to do this one. To be honest, been a bit scared to make an attempt by myself Embarassed

Wouldn't mind going on a group hunt of this one if it takes shape and I'm free.

Shane, The water we had to cross was only about knee deep----our knees. For you, it would probably be calf deep. wink

Water sandals would be fine.

Pete, This is one that if there was very much snow cover, it would be luck only that finds this one. I hope others check it out, it was a lot of fun and not that hard, really.

June 27th Sagasu and I are planning a trip to the Castle Rock Lake area for the 3 Kayak adventure caches on the LCG as well as a ride on the Omaha bike trail to seek the caches (lonely or not) along the way. Logistics not set yet as to start time but may be able to alter or add Spider Island to the mix if others can go for it on that day.
