One year of geocaching

Yesterday marked a year of geocaching for John C.

Back on April 13, 2001, I found two of Jeremy's caches - which had been hidden on April 4. Today I drove past his Magnolia Bluff hide and decided to revisit it one year later. It's still there and in good shape. I wanted to get over to his New Munster (back to basics) site this weekend - but didn't make it.

Anyway, it has been a great year of both hunting and hiding caches from the California desert to the Washington, D.C. Mall. Thank all of you who have shown me places that I've never been - the list grows longer each weekend!

Congratulations, John! Robin and I have enjoyed reading your posts and finding your caches. At the upcoming campout we hope to be able to spend more time chatting with you and other cachers than we had at the picnic last summer.

Congrats John... glad you enjoyed finding my caches.

I looked back and my one year anniversary was March 4. I actually didn't find the first cache I went looking for (Michi gami) because it had been stolen/vandalized. I tried a different cache later in the day (Pookie's Stash) and scored my first find.

I remember Pookie's Stash. That was my second-ever find, Robin's first. I just read the posts again and see that you were able to find it easily because of our footprints in the snow. I still have the pen I got from that stash... been using it all day today.

Then, of course, there are the famous (some still say infamous) Ken and Robin hideouts. Our Fourth of July finds of New Prospect and Lake by a Lake are my favorites. We also did (3) Ken and Robin virtual caches on July 21 and chased a wild goose in early fall. I?ve been thinking of an expedition out to an Uncharted Island, not seen since last September.

This is all geocaching at its best. But then, there is no such thing as a bad geocaching day! Yes, I too look forward to the upcoming campout and pow wow.

In closing, let me mention that I did a fast moving 40 minute PowerPoint presentation about GPS operations and Geocaching for the Four Lakes Metal Detectors Club last month.

After all the congrats about 1st anniversaries of geocaching, I thought it might be worthy of note that May 3rd marks the 2nd anniversary of the first ever geocache in 2000 (only three days after selective availability was removed), and look at our sport now.
