Sipping cider and eating lunch after our snowshoe to Eagle Source THB came to the conclusion that we should do more group winter outings. He also came up with this suggestion: Apostle Islands – MAWIKWE SEA CAVES. There has been more interest in this suggestion than any others in the Epic Snowshoe Caches thread. So, now all we have to do is make it happen.
If you're interested in joining a group outing here's the place to say so. We'll never get a weekend that works for everyone, but we can work to get one that works for most. I think we would probably get a hotel room and drive up Friday night. Perhaps we could even list a hotel for this outing and then folks that want to could all meet up and stay at he same place. I don't know quite how to get it all organized but let's just start with if you're interested and go from there.
One of last winter's visitors to the cache posted a link to his 360 views of the cache area. Check it out here.
So, are you interested? |

Trekkin' was saying "we've kayaked there, we hiked there, we have all the caches up there, but if zuma goes......I'll go, I enjoy his company."
HA!!!!!!! I am holding him to this, and I didn't even have to bribe Ralph....it just happened!
Ralph, you cannot imagine how big my smile was when I saw your post here.....you dinged him again! |

Heck, Maybe we can bribe PassingWind out of his self-imposed geo-exile..if we can find him. I would love to join in on this also.
Is there anyway we could make this an event? PassingWind is the only cacher I know up in that area. The AmericInn has a small water park. I'll see if I can get some info. |

Both Waushburn and Ashland have a Super 8. Best Western in Ashland, too.
You could nab those crazy caches on the Ashland breakwater, too, if you stayed overnight. |

One weekend that I would not recommend is the Week of Feb.25-27.
That's Birkie weekend for the Cable/Hayward areas and most hotel/motel rooms are booked within a 60 mile radius. Just looked at the Birkie web site and they have over 6000 entrants for the races. |

Can't make an event out of only searching for a cache. You could make some kind of event at the place where everyone is staying or at some restaurant, etc., or even for the "cookout", and anyone who came to that could log the event. Then only the ones who went out on the hike would log the actual cache find. |

Gwyn, my gut still hurts a bit from laughing so hard yesterday.....What a great day. Not many finds, but so many laughs along the way!!!! Especially on Dick's jibe on me at the burnt cache, though the birthday cake story was a close runner up.

We would be interested depending on the weekend chosen. And with enough advance warning (gotta square away those vacation hours from work) and if the weather is good enough for travel! Extra bonus - we've never been to this part of the state before! |

I would be interested depending on whether I can leave the county whatever weekend is chosen. Once the waterpark was mentioned, my family would probably come along for any possible event but they would do some shopping while I went off with the group. |

That is plenty of interest so we'll go ahead with making a plan. I've been trying to think how to best handle the timing of a group outing. I'm thinking we base out of Ashland as I don't think there is much for hotels north of there?
Cheesehead brought up a small water park hotel and there seems to be some interest in it. I looked it up and it must be the AmericInn. It appears that the Best Western is also very close to the AmericInn. Both places have some bad reviews mixed in with a lot of ok ones. If anyone knows of a place closer to the caves that might work post away!
I'm thinking that we should plan for a Saturday afternoon hike out to the caves. I think it would be cool to be out there toward the end of the day? This also allows for an option of hiking out Sunday morning if the temps or wind is bad on Saturday.
I don't think we'll be able to provide a cookout in the parking lot for this one. It's too far and we have all four of us in the RAV there is only so much room. I don't think we can fit the camp kitchen and food with all of the other stuff we'd need for a weekend trip.
So, if folks want an event tied into this in some way it may be best to plan something at one of the hotels or a local restaurant Saturday night?
Now, I have to somehow round everyone up in this house and try to figure out what weekends might work... |
