Thanks Bec. Is this the guy that you thought was an obstinate cross-dressing curmudgeon or is this the cross-eyed nitwit? I get those two mixed up.

I THINK HE'S THE ONE WHO FREQUENTS THE FORUMS....

LOL, I forgot my PC sunglasses.

Is that true? Every state but Wisconsin allows this? Reading that statement really made me cringe as most "every" and "all" statements turn out to be false.

i watered it down a bit, because ND may also not allow caches, but I havent yet nailed that down. But, yeah, every state I have been in allows geocaches. There is nothing on line about ND not allowing rest area caches, but it is a report. Still, that leaves only 2 backwards states.

Just because you four them in every state, does not mean that the state allows them. They just dont know that they are there

My state representative Anne Hraychuck serves on both the Transportation and Natural Resource committees. I have expressed my views to her about this issue - including the fact that the DNR encourages this activity while the Transportation discourages it. I think she was also surprised to find how many caches were already in her district. She is likely to support any measures to allow caching at rest stops (if it ever gets past the bureaucrats.

Zuma, Thanks for reviving this issue!

Wonderful. This may be our next course of action. Members of the Transportation Committees in the Assembly and Senate are key because they have legislative oversight over the DOT.

The DOT has agreed to revisit the issue of caches in rest areas. The board will continue to dialog with the DOT on this issue, and let the membership know when and if progress is made.

Thanks

zuma

I know Michigan approached MiGO a couple of years ago when I was on MiGO' EC about working with them to try and get at least one cache in each of Michigan's Welcome Centers. Every rest stop is not a welcome center, but it is the same organization.

And I think we stopped at every rest stop from the wisconsin border to Sault Ste Marie last year to pick up a caches. Many had items of interest at them that we would have normally just driven past. Kudos to the State for approaching you.

I didn't know that.... the things you learn when you read another state's forums!

I was at work today when a gentleman I thought I recognized came in the store. He bought a local l paper and left. A few hours later he was back in and bought something else. I stopped him and asked him if he was who I thought he was. He indeed was. The gentleman was Sen. Bob Jauch of Poplar, WI. Dist 25. SO I asked if I could have his ear for a few minutes.

I asked him if he had ever heard of geocaching. He had not. So I gave him the quick 101 lesson. Explained to him how the DNR as worked with the WGA and geocachers to set a policy for geocaching on DNR lands. Told him all is good. BUT the WI DOT has been against it on DOT properties. He asked what properties. I told him waysides and park & rides and such. He ask why would cacher go to these place looking for caches. I said traveling and such. I explained how the Min DOT & Min State Parks have embraced geocaching and how it increased visits to the Parks by 30 or so percent. He said he would give the DOT a call.

I am heading out of town in the morning for the weekend. But when I return home, I will send him an email with more details about geocaching in general when I return home.

Also to note. There is a local Hayward Gal who is running for State Assembly. Her and her family do geocache but have not been very active as of recent.

So.....just maybe.

Chris, Way to seize upon an opportunity! If nothing else, that is one more legislator (maybe TWO) who now has an awareness of this sport and some of the issues that surround it. Thanks for putting yourself out there.

Well, he hasn't forgotten! He's on a local radio program right now and mentioned he talked to a " concerned citizen about DOT policies"
