I cannot figure out which is sillier... that HC continues to go on and on and on about what we up north don't get, or that people continue to egg him on and acknowledge the posts about it.....

Sorry Cheezehead, it just is getting to be so old for me.....
Do love your caches and that you continue to hide more for us northerners and others. I know you do lots of events too, which is great. We hope to get to one someday soon.

So, I have six solar lights pulled apart, and I am soldering them up right now. I measured the output with my meter, and I am seeing about 2-3 per panel, so if I hook them up in pairs, then link those three pairs together, I should get an output around 5-6V going into the USB....

As a bonus, the lights came with some 600maH batteries. Not as much juice as my 2700maH Maha's, but still, free rechargables is always a bonus!

Well, that made a lot of sense to me! Shocked wink

One thing I have noticed on solar lighting is that most run out of juice each night as the days get shorter (not a problem right now, thankfully). You see them a lot in cemeteries now by individual graves. Like the idea of them for a night cache. Have no idea about the battery charger thing. Rolling Eyes

I was thinking about keeping a couple for camping. They are pretty light weight, and you could just stick them in the ground next to your tent and let them do their thing. nice "night lite" for the kids, or an easy way to find your tent when that last cache took you longer than you thought and you get back to camp after dark.

Solar array puts out a steady 4.8 volts under this 13 watt CP bulb. Exactly enough to charge a Phillips mp3 player ,or an LG chocolate touch phone. (MY first two test subjects) Now to test it in full sun and shade outside, before I get it in a finished state!

Total cost;

$9.95 for the four lights on sale from tru-value stores this week.
Wire scrapped from the lights after I gutted the panels.
USB female interface I scavanged from some old computer parts.
