What icon to use here?

We're getting ready to submit a cache for publication, so this poll relates to the recent forum thread in the "General" section. No need to express any opinions here, and we have a way that we are leaning on this one, but look at the following scenario, and vote on which you think it should be: Puzzle or Multi.

Listed coords take you to the first location. All other locations except the final are shown on the cache page, too. At each location, make a determination based on your observations (very simple), and write down a number based on your answer to the question posed at each spot (same question at all of them). After visiting all locations, go to the spot you have figured out to find the container.

Remember: No discussion here, just the poll vote, and it has to be soon. Poll will run for two days. Thanks.

Is it a Puzzle or a Multi?

I reread all of that before posing this question, since I came away from that discussion with no clear idea of what was what. I still don't, but I thought I could gage the preference of most hiders/seekers with the poll. It's still as clear as mud to me! Rolling Eyes

Guess we'll flip a coin and go with those results. But folks still have time to weigh in on this subject here.

I belive that if there is a container with cords in it, a piece of tape with cords, or numbers written on a pipe with given cords to the next Wp then it would be a multi. If you have to answer a question or do any sort of math then it's a puzzle.

I had the same issue with a cache series I placed. What it came down to was this: Can the geocacher visit any of the stages in random order? If they can, then it can be listed as a puzzle. If the cacher has to visit each stage in order then it must be a multi. I appealled that all the way to GS headquarters to no avail.

Once again, this is not necessarily true. In the series I published there where field solve puzzles at just about every stage, but because it was essential that you do the stages in order it had to be listed as a multi. I disagreed but did not win the battle.

Here's another way to look at it: could you complete the cache having just the beginning coordinates and the knowledge that it's a multi? If yes, then it's a multi. If you need the cache listing to complete it, then it's a puzzle. It's not a hard and fast rule, just another consideration.

Good point, Doug. It also sounds like it would be analogous to having to visit several websites from the cache page to obtain information to determine the final location. With that situation it more clearly fits the category of puzzle/unknown.

This cache was published this evening: GC2E9RF

I chose to list it as a puzzle cache because of a couple of things:

1) There was no sign to get information from, just use your brains (but the answers aren't very hard).
2) The waypoints could be visited in any order, and you still could make the find.

Very interesting idea. I would definately classify this one a puzzle and it's a unique twist. And a true "field" solve.

BTW - I think I'm within a stone's throw at this point.
