I should have been more vigilant last weekend about getting some fishing tips from the experienced people that were there. But now that I know there are fishermen among us, I'll pose my question here. Smile

I used to fish for Bass when I lived back in IL and enjoyed it. It was mostly in streams. The last few years I've tried to get back into it but I really don't know what I'm doing. I've caught a few here and there but not enough to keep me interested really.

I'd just as soon leave the whole thing considering I'd rather be geocaching, but now that my kids are old enough to be interested in fishing (and are excited to go this summer) I figure I can't hang my rod up just yet.

I've had them out with me a few times before - the older one anyway - and he's by no means through with it Smile The problem with this is that, though I enjoy fishing, I suck at it, and if I take them they're going to learn to hate it because we won't catch anything.

We don't have any motorized craft but we do have kayaks that we've fished out of and while cramped, are functional and especially good for getting in the tight places.

Does anyone here have any suggestions on good fishing locations in the Wausau area for kids. They'd be happy with panfish. Also, what do you suggest using for bait with kids? We've tried the corn and dough balls to no avail. Worms have worked but make a mess in the boat, probably due to the cramped nature of the kayak. (I know! Get a canoe!) Smile

I want them to have a good experience and to be teaching ME how to fish when they're older! Thanks for the help Smile

Below the Schofield Dam is very good. Especially right before any storms. I have brought in quite a few big bass there. You can also catch some nice walleyes, panfish, carp, pike and musky there. Also, you can try the troughs by golf course road. Good for bass and panfish. Mud Lake has tons of bass as well.

As far as bait, I normally use top water and chompers. But for live bait, worms and leeches works best.

Hmm, yeah those are all places I haven't tried before. Thanks for the suggestions! Smile I've been paddling in those places, but never fished Smile

For Panfish and a small lake with "calm" I would suggest Rice Lake where my paddle caches are. Worms or a small spinner will work well. This can be done in a kayak.
