We took a day trip down to Galena to cache yesterday. What a treat these caches all were. All with nice write ups to share more of what we were seeing and its history, placements meant to highlight the various attractions and a few fun and clever hides thrown in for good measure. There are still a few in the area we couldn't get to, but if you want a day of destination caching, this is a good one. So much history here and pretty much the whole darn town is on the National Register.

Oh, and wear good walking shoes and be prepared to burn a few calories. It's just much easier to park it and walk to many of them. You'll see more that way, too. We had to laugh, as we seemed to be crossing caching paths with SGH and the BB, but never saw each other in the flesh.

Also, you have to travel through Shullsburg WI, do the Gravity Hill cache and just experience that weirdness. We were not alone on that road yesterday!

Wisundevil, Weasel and I had plans to make it that far, I see some of the same caches we had in our bookmark list were ones that you visited. We ended up caching in Wyalusing instead as we hit that multi..

Love the town! Have yet to cache there.

The Main Street was used in the film, "Field of Dreams", when he travels back in time to find the Doc. Also, seeing a watergate (?) in the levee is different! Alot of history there!

I am going here on October 27th on a winery trip. I guess that the GPS will need to come along.

Yes Galena is great place to explore, shop and cache. And some great wine.
Some great caches placed by our geo-buddy Kirk F and GalenaFour.
Word from KirkF is that there are some new caches "in the works" moving forward.

Yes indeed J&L a couple of scenes from the "Field of Dreams" were shot there as we also heard that while taking the downtown historical walking tour with our guide Steve. Lots of uber nice folks there and plenty of sights and caches to enjoy. Oh, did I mention the food? Very nice!
History abounds there for sure.

T&B we whole heartrendingly agree!

I know this thread is old but we were down in Galena last week caching. We camped about 40 miles from there and cached over three days with one day in Galena. The area is beautiful and Galena was fun to cache in. Lots of history there. We also cached in Fulton, Illinois. There was a cache at the cemetery where Ronald Reagan's grand parents are buried.

Fulton, IL? I thought nobody ever heard of it, much less traveled there!

Our family homesteads are in Fulton, owned and mostly occupied by relatives since the early 1930's. But our clan has been there continuously since the late 1800's.

We've done a few caches in Fulton and across the Mississippi in Clinton, Iowa. But mostly we visit with an elderly uncle, our last fulltime Fulton relative in residence. It's a very picturesque area all the way up and down the river. These are all old towns with lotsa interesting history. Consequently, lotsa interesting caches.

Heh, heh. At risk of hijacking the thread, we've cached in Fulton as well. We stopped and did a handful near and in Heritage Canyon, which was not what we expected, but really interesting. We took a long weekend and followed the Mississippi from Dubuque down to the Missouri border and back up the Illinois side. Pretty, but we still love the Wisconsin stretch of the Mississippi best.
