Deleting caches from Garmin Nuvi 1350 and Dakota 20

With the mostly nonexisitant and oh so NOT detailed manuals for these units, I contacted Garmin Support to find out how to delete the caches. Using a MacBook and dragging them from the unit to the trash didn't always clear them. So now I empty the trash before dragging the unit icon to the trash.

Lately, when I download new caches and disconnect from the computer, they aren't in the Nuvi or the Dakota. Anyone have any advice on how to correct this issue?

The only time gpx files wouldn't appear in my Dakota after downloading them is if the unit was already full with the maximum of 2,000 caches. Perhaps you attempted to delete the old ones to make room for new ones and they weren't deleted?

If the GPSr's GPX folder appears to be empty when viewing on the computer and I empty the computer's trash BEFORE I disconnect the GPSr, isn't it empty? I don't care to have 2000 caches in my GPSr so that is why I am trying to completely empty it sometimes, when I add new ones. The Nuvi only holds 200 caches, I think, so I try to keep that one completely empty before each cache trip.

Same thing happened today when I was loading the Dakota for a run today. I wanted to load 15 caches and there are 8 Waypoints and 15 caches already in the Dakota. Even though I saved each one twice, one didn't load. I don't use a secondary program for loading. I load from a Bookmarked list so I don't have a bunch of caches in the GPSr that I don't intend to pursue.

Haven't figured out how to use GSAK for any of that yet since I just started using it.

Not sure our Nuvi works the same as yours, but we just delete them right on the unit. Touch "Tools", then "My Data", then "Delete Favorites". We usually select all, then uncheck the few we want to keep and delete the rest.

The way I found to delete caches from my Dakota 20 is through GSAK. On the box that come up when you send waypoints to GPS there is a box you can check that says clear GPS before sending.

Guess I'll need to sit down and figure out GSAK. I only use it to run some macros for a couple challenges right now.

My Nuvi 1350 doesn't load caches anymore. I keep trying but it keeps failing. I did like what was posted above to delete caches and clear it. Thanks!

I had similar issues with my NUVI 1350 until I adopted my current process. I use GSAK, GPX_by_Cache_Type macro, and POI Loader. To avoid any possible memory issues I installed an 8gb microSD card into the 1350 and load the caches on that.

1. Load all your Pocket Queries into GSAK.
2. Run the GPX_by_Cache_Type macro.
3. Run POI Loader and "Remove all previously installed custom POIs from your device."
4. Run POI Loader again and "Install new custom POIs onto your device."

Using this method you can load several thousand caches on the NUVI. All of the descriptions, hints, and some of the recent logs will be available, as well as the ability to search the caches by cache type.

LOL, while playing with GSAK and my GPS, I managed to delete all but 6 caches in my GPS. It makes no sense of the ones that are left. I think there were over 300 caches loaded. Three are 45 miles away and the other 3 are 200 and 400 miles away. Might as well clear them all out.

Lions Fan ... First I have to figure out how to load a PQ. Then to download the PQ to my GPS. Lots to learn and plenty of time to play so it will happen.

We "upgraded" to a nuvi 1450t. We like the bigger screen, but it won't allow us to use the POI loader with any success. When loaded that way, if we try to actually navigate to one such cache, the unit shuts off!

We've had to load them from the generic "1450t" dropdown in GSAK and then go through the tedium of deleting them one by one. Loading them this way places them in "all favorites."

On top of all that, even with updated maps, this chick sure doesn't seem to know the best way to get places a lot of time! Big screen is about the only plus!

Well it turns out my caches weren't deleted from the Dakota, just hidden. Somehow, they reappeared so didn't need to reload them all. Just for fun, I stuck the preloaded Garmin map microSD in the Nuvi. Didn't see anything new except a message that the map disk was over a year old. Didn't even realize that the Nuvi had a slot for it.
