I was wondering if this is even a possibility, and if so, what steps are involved in accomplishing it?
I have GSAK with Mapsource, which I can use pretty effectively. What I'd like to do is this.....somehow import a map, say from the DNR website, then load in my finds for that area to see where they fall on said map. GSAK lists a number of other mapping programs in the dropdown but to the best of my knowledge, the Mapsource one is the one I can use. I do have google earth available as well, I guess.
I'm guessing it's possible, but as I sit and look, I'm not seeing how. Save the imported map as a picture file first? Thanks for any guidance on this one. |

I've done this before with Google Earth and the process isn't too awkward. I'll be glad to detail it if you're interested. |

Can you give a little more detail about why you're trying to do this? I have a few ideas that might work, but they vary based on what the intended outcome is. |

Ed, GMO emailed me with some steps to try, which I hope to do later. Basically, I'd like to be able to visualize how my finds for an area match up with a map of state designated areas. Hopefully I can work through LB's steps, which I kind of thought would be a possibility but didn't quite know how to proceed with it. Now I think I do! |

There are a couple of GSAK macros I've used that interface with Google Earth that are good for showing basic locations.
I've looked for, but never been able to find, a download from the DNR with GPS points for their properties. You can manually get them from various maps, but what a pain considering they change as property boundaries change.
Google maps are pretty good, but their state owned property doesn't always show, or may show incorrectly.
If it's a "proximity" thing you're looking at let me and I might be able to help with a map that shows the the 528' exclusion zones based on a GPX file from GSAK. |

I have a feeling that she is trying to match up with her finds with where a state forest or state land area is for a challenge I know King Boreas has several for various Mn. DNR lands.
If you can't get it, give me a call and we can meet up and try and figure out what you need to do as I'm putting something together for a Challenge cache I'm making and may be able to help you out.
I wish the Wis. DNR would get smart like the Mn. and give you a website where you can download the .kml file or trails and parks. |

I stumbled on this on the MN website a while ago for some unknown reason and thought it was awesome. |

Yeah, isn't that one little thing great? I've tried downloading tiger shapefiles for Wis. but haven't had much luck.
Wish Wis. DNR would catch up to Mn.'s in so many aspects, particularly in the state park sticker. |

Try this obtain a copy of Delorme 8 or 9 Its got the tails marked along with the other stuff you are looking for . All you need to do then is put the lat long in and it will show where it is on the map.
