Not every cache is for every body. Get the ones you like, and quite complaining about the ones you dont like.

That is not the point of this thread, and I think you know that.

zuma, do you have an opinion on the topic of the thread itself, particularly because you were heavily involved a few years ago in trying to get the DOT to change their policies?

Some background on how the DOT views geocaching:

greyhounder wrote:
From the website:

Quote:
The Wisconsin Department of Transportation, for safety and operational reasons,
discourages citizens from using any WisDOT site for geocaching purposes. Any
"cache" found by site staff will be disposed of promptly

This includes Park & Ride lots owned by the DOT.

Here's you quoting DOT rep Bob Spoerl in February of last year:
zuma wrote:

While we appreciate that the use you are suggesting may be relatively innocuous, there are many similar activities that could likewise seek accommodation as legitimate uses of safety rest areas. The department routinely denies use of safety rest areas for private purposes. There are other more appropriate locations for activities that are not part of the public purpose for safety rest areas. As is the case with other similar activities, the geocaching activity does not depend on use of safety rest areas and there are more suitable options for the activity. Safety and security are an important concern in managing these facilities. The department does not support placement of unknown containers that could be reported as potential hazards, and is not in a position to permit or selectively allow special uses of the safety rest areas. The department does not see the geocaching activity as compatible with the function of these sites and the efficient management of the facilities.

Based on this policy and the responses, what do you think the DOT would think about this topic?

If you think the DOT is eventually going to find out and put a stop to these, do we as an association care?

If you think based on your experience with the DOT that they will be fine with it, perhaps this could be a new line of argument the WGA can use with the DOT to allow caches in rest areas, by pointing out that there are already thousands of geocaches in DOT-owned signs, guardrails, and so on?

For those who weren't part of the discussion 1-2 years ago, here are some threads for reference to the general DOT topic:

If we start "mentioning" to the DOT where all the P/G caches are, will they give us a new blacklist?

They gave us an acceptable answer to the DOT property question, which we can either agree/disagree with. I'm not sure how bringing up the Stop sign caches will help. (this is my opinion as a cacher and WGA member, not a BOD member)

Well, perhaps they're already aware of it and simply don't care and never will.

Then again we all just assumed rest area caches were A-OK, but when they found out about them they demanded they all be archived.

I predict that at some point, "someone" in the DOT is going to become aware of this as these types of hides become more and more commonplace, and it's not going to be pretty, given their position on geocaching on other DOT property.

My point is that it is not cool to sign and whine, and I am getting tired of people whining about caches that they don't like.

If you take the smiley, smile, say thanks, and move on to what you do like, whether it was your favorite cache of the day or not.

zuma, it's obvious you either didn't read what I wrote on the first page of this thread or are simply choosing to ignore it.

I had thought that one of our objectives as an association was to discuss and be concerned with issues that affect or potentially affect the hobby. To dismiss that as "sign and whine" isn't helpful, particularly coming from a WGA officer.

On further reflection, why do I even care? As long as the reviewers publish a cache, that's the only measure that matters. Anything that the DOT or anybody would do won't affect the way I hide or find caches in the least. And what I do in my own pursuit of the hobby should be all that I'm concerned about. Best to just keep the blinders on to everything else.

So, never mind.

If it's a game, who is keeping count? Did I win?
