I've only hidden 2 caches, but a DNF on my 1st let me know when it had disappeared over winter (it is a PNG in a semi scenic area and someone with a few thousands finds let me know he couldn't find it, and sure enough...)and a few DNFs on my newest one along with an opinion from an experienced cacher helped me make a few changes. A few more DNFs and advice helped me realize that post changes, people just weren't willing to stick their hands in certain places so I didn't need to repeatedly hike the trail to check on it.
I'm not sure how many DNFs we have, but I keep an eye on the list and about half of them were disabled within a month or two of our DNFs. This included a 5/5 in Puerto Rico that, now archived, will save people from a potentially dangerous climb and a whole lot of "rain forest ivy."

I do usually limit myself to one DNF log per cache, but then mention my multiple failures in my find log (assuming I finally find it!), as well as thanking all of the cachers who gave me hints so that I COULD finally find it.
