Our little eTrex that has served us so well during our three years of geocaching took a tumble this weekend and we will be looking for a new GPSr We have been thinking about upgrading...but aren't exactly in the financial position to drop 300-500 dollars on a new GPS. We do utilize Smartphones as our backup GPS, but due to battery consumption it is tough to use that as our primary. Any suggestions on a cost effective GPS to purchase? Thanks!

I'm partial to my DeLorme PN-60, which you can generally find in the $250 range.

I can't justify paying $200 or more for a receiver. I realize the higher end models are more accurate, especially in heavy tree cover.

But seeing that I'm just a casual geocacher, I'm fine with my Garmin Etrex Venture HC, which I paid $129 for.

The higher end models are for those that want all the bells and whistles (paperless, wherigo, etc) as well as better accuracy.

All depends what you want in a receiver and the company that you prefer (Garmin, Lowrance, etc)

Many online sites have refurbished units of current models available for much less than a new one. Don't be afraid to check out some of these but they get snapped up fast. You may be able to get one with more features if that's what you are looking for. Todd really hit the nail on the head, "What do you want out of the receiver?"

Maybe check on ebay or GPSCity has some good deals. http://www.gpscity.com/gps-receivers/&p=1&t=Outdoor+GPS

I got lucky and Gander Mountain had the Montana 650T on sale for $450-best price I have seen.

It's the GPS that I use.
Sunshine has an Oregon 450.

We have an Etrex 20 and it is more accurate than the Etrex Legend we formerly used.

Acquires GPS signal fast and keeps a lock and does paperless caching and is easy to use.

On Amazon for $166.66 right now.

Shocked

I just cannot fathom paying that much for a receiver even if it was a sale price for a high end receiver. Even if I had the money, I just don't geocache enough to use it.

I do have my eye on the Etex 20, mainly for the paperless aspect. I love my Garmin Etrex Venture HC but it has no info on the cache other than the name and GC code. So I always have to refer to GDAK on my phone for the cache info if I'm on the trail or to my Nuvi if I'm in the car.

Think I'll save up for this and watch for sales.

I know. My cousin works at the Milwaukee location. He's in Green Bay now for a couple weeks training the workers at the Green Bay location.
