Crow-T-Robot found Butler Rock Lookout (Traditional Cache) at 9/1/2013

Log Date: 9/1/2013
I didn't realize just how far from home this cache was and I got a late start on the drive, so I arrived at the parking coordinates with about an hour of daylight left. That turned out to be a real blessing.

The woods were spectacularly quiet today. My footsteps along the trail were the only noise disrupting the silence. I wouldn't have minded a bit more chatter from squirrels or some bird song, but the quiet was nice, too. Halfway to the cache, the sky suddenly clouded over and raindrops began playing notes on the leafs but it vanished almost as quickly as it arrived.

A few rest stops getting up the hill portion and the view that greeted me at the rock was amazing. A long, unobstructed view like that is rare in these parts and with the sun still up but quickly falling, it turned everything a summers evening shade of gold. I had left my camera at home and my phone in my car (no service out in the boondocks), so I couldn't take any pictures...all I could do is sit on the rock and soak it in with my eyes. And believe me, I did.

As I sat there, I came up with my own formula for geocaches: I'd rather find one pretty good cache than five mediocre ones. I'd rather find one really good cache than 20 mediocre ones and I'd rather find one great cache than 50+ mediocre ones. With this find, I can skip the other 50 caches...a perfect example of what geocaches should be: a good hike in the woods, leading to a hidden but spectacular spot. The kind of cache that if you wanted to show someone new what the spirit of the hobby really is, this is one you'd take them to.

The cache was a quick find and everything was in great shape. I dropped off an unactivated Spinner trackable for the next finder. A cache like might be off the beaten path somewhat but it certainly deserves to have more visitors. Thanks for placing it, sweetlife!

Great log to get. Bruce is always one to let you know that he enjoyed the effort.

All of the above is definitely true of this cache. It easily falls into our top ten. Took lots of great photos when we were there. Spectacular views and hope to hike there again sometime in fall when the color will make it even more stunning.

Doesn't look too far from the WGA picnic location...

Stealing the thread a little, but Thunder Mountain just south of the picnic has some great views. Of course there is a Sweetlife cache there too.

The Fall Picnic would be an excellent time...fall colors usually peak in that area by the end of September...and that is an absolutely awesome spot to soak them in Cool

But alas, the BOD don't usually get a lot of time for caching at the WGA events so probably not. Besides, I have gotten it into my head that on Sunday I will be looking for GC62B0 before heading home.

Well....it'll be the long, scenic way home.
