Im interested in having Wauwatosa adopt a resolution (or similar) to allow placing geocaches on City property such as Hart Park.

Previously I contacted the Superintendent of Parks and Forestry who said in itself one geocache would not constitute a hazard or obstruction but the precedent it would set leaves the door open to a potential 50,000 for Wauwatosa residents alone.

But if the City had a resolution requiring people to follow the rules, such as 500ft between caches, etc, I think they would allow geocaching.

So, Im not sure if I should go before the City Council or some other board, to propose the City take up this matter. Does anyone have experience or advice? Or do you want to help make this happen?

I have a "bit" of experience in this matter, since we live in Wauwatosa, almost all of our caches are in Wauwatosa, and we have found (I think) every cache in Wauwatosa.

All parks in Wauwatosa have a geocaching policy already! It's the Milwaukee County Parks policy. The Milwaukee County Park system has authority over all public parks in Wauwatosa, as well as the whole county. To place a cache in a Wauwatosa park such as Hart Park (we just walked there about a week ago) fill out the geocaching permit form, a fillable PDF form found at http://county.milwaukee.gov/Geocaching21582.htm

Then email it to parks@milwcnty.com
Brian Russart, the Milwaukee County Parks Land Manager, personally reviews them and approves most of them. He's my hero. Smile And we want to keep him happy.

There are several parks that caches are not allowed in part of the park. The list of those parks is shown here:
http://county.milwaukee.gov/GeoGuidelinesPlacer22359.htm

Jacobus Park is the only one (I think) on the list that is located in Wauwatosa.

To be approved by the park system, the caches must labeled as a geocache on the outside container and be within a certain distance from a path or trail. We've had about 75% of our caches approved by them and some have been denied because they were too far off the path or in an environmentally sensitive area.

The volunteer geocaching.com reviewers normally will not approve and publish a cache in a Milwaukee County Park unless they see that you have stated the placement permit number from the Milwaukee County Parks Land Manager.

Mark feel free to post questions/comments here or PM me if any additional issues/thoughts/questions.

Another thought comes to mind. The previous message addressed parks and any land owned by the Milwaukee County Park system. If the property you are considering is owned or managed by the city of Wauwatosa rather than the park system, then it may not be as clear as to how to obtain permission. Howz that for a non-committal answer?

it would also seem that Brian Russart would be aware if the location in question is within his authority or not. Sounds like a great place to start.

Actually Hart Park is not part of Milwaukee County Parks. As far as I know, it is the only park of any size owned by Wauwatosa.

Thanks for the responses! Appears the only two parks owned by the City are Hart Park and Webster Park. I'd still like to get approval to hide a cache (or two at >500ft apart) in Hart Park. That is such a popular place and an awesome park.

The Superintendent told me to call in and get on the agenda for the City park board meeting at 7:30am, Tues Nov 19th, in the Parkview room of the Muellner Building at Hart Park. I'll call later today and confirm we are on the agenda.

Maybe I can present to the board the Milwaukee County Parks policy and push them to adopt the same. Perhaps someone can contact Brian Russart to get his take the City adopting similar policies for their two parks. Maybe he will support us, and we can mention that at the meeting (Im sure the will know him).
