Ok I tried a search and did not find it easily so I will start a new thread.

What caches are most recommended by those out here to do in winter. I figure to ask and get a better chance to get some as we all know when the warm weather is here some are just not easily accessed. Besides in winter if one can make an adventure on an empty weekend why not?

So send some caches out here so if I am in the area I can get while we have the cold!!!

Thanks!!!

There are a few ways to determine if a cache is findable in the winter months, but the best way I have found is to look for caches that have Found logs since the last snow storm. If it hasn't been found since before the first snowfall, there's probably a reason.

Many cachers enjoy doing the T5 caches in the winter when there is ice on the lakes ("hard water"), especially if they don't have canoes or kayaks to access those places in the warm months. Just make sure the ice is thick and take the proper precautions out there.

In your area Sarge are the ones from the cache bash 3-4 yrs ago over along the Quass Creek on the east side of town. Those may still be published but not sure right now.

Another great series people enjoy is the Kiel River Firefighter series of caches in Kiel. About 2 miles walk one way and most are easy find in the snow.

Our monthly totals really don't go down in winter. Here are some of our techniques.

Look for new caches - if it was hidden in winter you should be able to find it in winter.
Look at the gallery and see if you can spot what the container is - it helps to know what you are looking for.
Skip micros unless they say winter friendly.
Keep a log of snowfall in areas where you might travel to during the winter - I mark the city and inches of snow on a calendar each time it snows.
Cache with friends - the company takes your mind off the cold and extra diggers improve your chances.
I always take at least 3 pairs of gloves along. Some for digging and some just to keep warm.
Don't be afraid to dnf a cache - the satisfaction of winter finds will ease the pain of dnfs.
If these things don't help drive straight south 1000 miles and come back March 15th.

don't forget...If there is snow on the ground and it hasn't snowed since the last finder, just follow the tracks to the container, unless the drunken monkey has left some false tracks. Either way. Good suggestions everyone. Really need to do your research in the winter. Look at ratings, attributes and past logs.

I got the impression that the original poster was looking for recommendations of specific caches that would be better done in winter than other seasons. To that end I will offer these:

GCZ3CD Wequiock's Wonderful Waterfall - Not a long walk nor hard to get to in other seasons, but especially beautiful when the falls are frozen.
GC2TV7M Doe, Doe, Doe series
GCGNRY Marsh to the Philippine Islands
GC23YER Mathman 4th Anniversary - or any of the caches in "Mathman Swamp"
GC24TRB Ursa Minor - Yildun - or any of the Ursa Minor series - at the risk of promoting my own caches wink

We've never done this EarthCache, but we hear that "Valley of the Ice Grotto" (GC1A5D0) is pretty spectacular in the winter.

I would love to find the Valley of the Ice Grotto! Maybe we could get a group together.

We had hoped to set one up last year...then I broke my arm. We're hoping to join the KVR cave hike this year to scout it out, and host an outing a week or two later.

Of course, we can't host an event to go find a cache, but there's always a way. We did it a couple years back. It's all in how you say it! wink

Just make it a snowshoe hike event. Sherri Benz actually did a snowshoe event in Mauston last winter to find the Ranger Rick caches in Buckhorn State Park.

We just talked with Froggerz a couple of weeks ago about doing the Ice Grotto so we may be interested.
