What about WGA blessing/endorsing/coordinating the development and sale of Wisconsin GA Geocoins? There seems to be some interest. Tentative costs are reasonable; 200 for one time die fees, then cost per coin lots (2.60) for lots of 100-300. Smokey and the Teacher have some leads on preordering to control costs as well. If no interest in WGA sponsoring or helping, any problem using the WGA logo?

Kent, I think this is something the WGA could and should get involved in, since there appears to be grass roots support to have geocoins made. Understand that we haven't discussed or voted on this, but in my opinion, we could set up an order-taking system here at the WGA site. We'd, of couse, have to review the coin design, quality, and pricing for our members. If Smokey or someone else would like to spearhead this as a WGA project, I'd be glad to be the liaison on the WGA board.

Excellent! Smokey not withstanding, anything I can do to help, I would love to do so and soon. Please advise on the next steps and what I can do.

I too think this is a great idea.
I would think that especially a good sized "first release" pre-order would be a big thing. I think many people would by multiple coins. Seems like a win-win to me ... big demand in the begining, helps spread the setup cost, then smaller but steady demand after that.

A suggestion ... there must be people out there geocaching that have not joined the WGA ... BUT, if you created a new "Spread the Word" scrolling banner or WGA logo with link for inclusision on geocaching pages, that ALSO mentions something like "New! Order your own Wisconsin Geocaching Coins." ... I think it would help sell more of them AND draw more people into the WGA Pages and joining the WGA.

Questions: Do members want individual numbers on these geocoins? (That costs more.) More importantly, WHY do you want these? What is their purpose?

Just asking so we can make sure the project meets the objectives.

As far as I am concerned, my desire to have these is several fold. First, to release and track if they were numbered. Second, to purchase and use as FTF incentives, third, to trade/collect with others who have some. Those are my reasons. Can't speak for others, obviously.

Thanks for your interest and support.

Tracking seems to be a good idea. Just buying one and kissing it good-bye isn't as much fun, especially if you have kids. Heck, you could put it on a stuffed animal and have "The Little Otter and her Quarter" or something. (Yes, I know the coins are worth more than $0.25.)

All the things that others have stated (so yes, trackable), but also ...

Pride and Involvement in the WGA.
I think what I mean is that a big part of geocaching in general is TBs and trackable GeoCoins. Just seems to me that if we as a group are trying to represent the Wisconsin Geocachers, and I think we do, we are missing something (based on how big we are already) if we don't have our own Wisconsin coin.

NOT having one is comparable to:

* A hospital not having a first aid kit for their employees.

* The kitchen staff of McDonald's ordering a pizza delivery from Pizza Hut.

* Walmart's accounting staff buying their office supplies from Office Max.

* Or Trudy sleeping in a canvas tent.

Point is somethings are just wrong!
Right?

Few people have their own term named after them.

Hey, if the WGA logo is on one side, who's face is on the other?

A few thoughts....

If that thing on the top of the page is the "WGA logo", it might be worth revamping it with a little more detail before putting it on a coin. It has served us well, but whenever I wear my WGA shirt, people ask what we do with PDA's and shoe boxes. Image

Maybe we should put "the hat" on the back? Image

It seems obvious that we would want a nice raised outline of Wisconsin on the coin.

I was thinking it would be cool to have a set of coordinates on it, but what coordinates would be suitable?

Since the association revolves around this website, it seems that the site name should also be included on the coin also.

Tracking is a great thing, but unless the WGA is going to come up with code and web pages that do it, what are the other options? At one time it seems Groundspeak "sold" a series of numbers to people or groups sp they could be tracked on geocaching.com. Not sure if this is still possible or feasable.

Another idea, although again raising the cost of the coins, would be to buy a bunch of travel bugs with consecutive numbers, and then use these numbers when the coins are printed. The other downside to this is that the coins would show up on geo.com as travel bugs instead of coins.

As Ken mentioned, it really comes down to what we want to do with the coins. If they are going to be mainly for keepsakes, prizes, trading, etc, then they really don't need the tracking numbers at all.

Trudy sitting in the whirlpool at the Holiday Inn? Hey, if we did that maybe Holiday Inn would underwrite part of the cost of the coins!

Or would this be a bit much for a coin? ... Coin Image Suggestion

I'm checking with TPTB at gc.com to see if we could make them trackable. When I find out info, I will post it here.

I've done a bit of artwork in Photoshop (Miata being the exception), so if you need something reworked or converted to see what it would look like on a coin, feel free to e-mail me.
