Hold onto your hats folks... I've heard from TPTB at Groundspeak.

Their E-mail response:
quote:
Yes, we can definitely do this.

Here is some additional information regarding our geocoin tracking policy and requirements.

First, unlike the usageocoins, the tracking numbers printed on all new coins must be alphanumeric, rather than solely numeric. The purposes for this is to avoid people being able to guess the numbers and falsely log coins/TBs.

The format can contain a prefix (like CA_________) and then be followed by a random combination of 4 letters & numbers (we'll generate the numbers, you specify the prefix if you'd like one). So, a typical coin number example would be: CA62h8 or CA124j.

We can send these codes with corresponding activation codes in a txt file or excel file, whichever works best for you.

If you wish to use the geocaching.com logo, you would have to include the URL beneath the logo (like on the usageocoins) but you are not required to use the logo if you so desire.

The only required text for trackable (on geocaching.com) coins would be: "Trackable on Geocaching.com"

Groundspeak will need to approve the final design prior to production in order to make sure that we are comfortable with the coin design (this is a family friendly site, as you know).

The cost per tracking number is US$1.50 and can be paid via paypal or credit card. There will be a 1,500 number minimum purchase required.

Please let me know if you have any additional questions.

I'll do the math: $2,250.00 (minimum) just to have them trackable through gc.com, and that doesn't include the cost of the coin.

With an outlay in the multiple thousands of dollars, we'll have to have the individual orders and money in the WGA coffers before we send in an order. It's doable IF we have enough interest.

You can be assured that Nurse Dave's Geocoin collecting group (of which I am a member) will purchase about 100 coins right off the bat. I definately think they should be GC.com trackable - so much more fun that way!

We need $ quotes from a couple of sources. It would also be good to have samples that we could look at. Kent or Smokey, can you provide me with the name and contact info for the companies that you know that make these? I think it would be best (but not mandatory) if it's some company that has already made geocoins for other organizations.

NurseDave might have some more and good opinions on each.

Why not contact an association from a state that already has coins? Ask them where they got them and if they can share the info. There are lots of states that have them already so...

We'v only come across washingtonga.com personally, and that is a very nice coin. They happen to track the coins on their own site. But I think it would be much nicer to track through gc.com.

You have our vote! This is a great idea!

Off the top of my head....
Michigan
Utah
Georgia
North Carolina
Alaska
California
Colorado
Texas

It does seem unnecessary to reinvent the wheel when so many others have already been through this. I'm sure many of them would be happy to share their experiences with the different companies. Another good place to learn about people's experiences with having geocoins produced is the GC.com travel bug forum. I know KVCoins has been recently discussed.

I used KV for our personal coins. I think they do a great job with helping you with design and their quality is always top notch. The problem is, you have to be patient to get the coins and I've heard they are always busy so some people have had a hard time getting responses from them. I had a great experience though.

The one many people are starting to use now are coinsandpins. From what I have seen they do a good job if you have a good design. If your design isn't so great the coins end-up looking cheap. So they maybe don't do as much in the design department.

I don't want to step in on another state's coin, but I'll help you with what you need.

From seeing so many coins, I think the important part is to have a nice mixutre of colour and textured metal. The coins that have too much colour tend to look cheesy and those that are only metal are VERY dependant on perfect design and craftmanship.

Having a nice design that can possibly be highlighted with colour and done with a lot of relief and texture works well.

My view on tracking:
People aren't going to be dropping many $5+ coins in caches or moving them from cache to cache unless you put them in a bag with a sticker telling them that's what you want. Even then you're rolling the die. So realistically you're paying gc.com $1.25 a coin to know who's collection it's in. I like the icon it adds when you have one, but I'd rather save $1.25 on the cost of the coin and buy more coins.
